What's your best idea of where to put my music while I reformat?
28 replies, posted
So windows is getting all fucky, I have a google analytics virus, I have way too many programs that I won't ever use again, I'm going to reformat and re install windows. I don't have an external drive, I have over 30GB of music, and the biggest USB flash drive I have is 16GB, and I only have one other @ 4GB, so I'm not splitting it up. Give me ideas of where to put my music while I unfuck windows.
Create a partition and store it there.
Amazon soundcloud + Flash drive for remaining 10GB.

Wouldn't the GA virus just be an annoying stowaway if I made another partition? Then I'd have the same problem again as soon as windows runs?

Maybe. I wasn't really thinking about that when I posted.

it's a new music storage service by Amazon. you can get 5GB of storage for free. I'm not sure if it lets you download the tracks you store or not

You can. If you buy a specific 99c album, you can get 20GB free. It's really convenient.
But can you play FLAC files? I wanna play them if I upload them to somewhere that's meant to play them.

Can you even do that anywhere? And how do you even have FLAC files? You're either pirating them, or ripping from the album. If it's the latter case, then what's the point of backing up?

Basically after I get my CDs on my computer I just throw them wherever the fuck I want and they get horse semen and stuff all over them. They rarely work after a few weeks of whatever the hell happens to them outside of their case.
Yep he's pirating
Maybe, but even if he had ripped all his CD's, would you want to re-rip all of them again?

It'd probably be faster than re-downloading them.
Actually, I don't know if you people realize this but most bands that come out with an album now(for like 2-3 years now) give you the option of downloading it when you like pre-order it with a t-shirt or something. Even if I did pirate why the fuck would it matter to you?

It matters because one: you're asking for our help, and two: I'm not endorsing pirating, but if you pirated it once, then what would be the problem with doing it again? I'm starting to grow tired of bastards that ask for help, but aren't open to anything that anyone else says. Kind of counter-intuitive, don't you think?

I don't think it'd be wise to be playing FLAC over a 3g connection somehow if it even works at all (doubt it). That's the only reason you'd stream - Otherwise you can just download the flacs from this service and play them.
The actual best way to do this is to get some free oversold web hosting.

Can you link me to this album?

Any one of these will work. It appears that the album is no longer 99c.
flac is a joke
i used to be all I NEED HIGH QUALITY MUSIC FLAC ONLY. then i was all nah flac is dumb 320 KBPS ONLY. then i decided 320 was too big too so ONLY 256KBPS
now i just roll with v0 because if you get music from good sources then it's indistinguishable (limewire is not a good source)
how about you cut that 16gb down to 5 by transcoding to v0 mp3 because unless you have a thousand dollar sound system and you have trained yourself you won't notice the difference
[editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
you could even do v2 because v0 is ultra high rate VBR, v2 is standard
but v0 is tiny compared to 320 which is also a fraction of flac
you could rar it, and upload in parts to a website like megaupload
It'd probably be faster than re-downloading them.
I download with speeds over 10MB/s, some CD's dont even reach those speeds (Shitty ones, but w/e).

Oh, well it looks like the 20gb is only for 1 year.

Do the partitioning and copying in Safe mode.
[editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
And format right after that. Don't boot into Windows.

it's not only those, it'll work with any album
Get an external HDD.
I have a 500GB LaCie Rikiki, it's great, it's so small I rarely carry a USB stick around now.
Use Windows disk manager to create a 30 - 50gb storage partition, holding files whilst you use the other partition(s) to format windows. I'd do a virus scan on the partition to make sure that it isn't harbouring malware, but if you are just storing music there you should be fine.

I have a server where I store all my music, videos and so on, and they're all backed up via external hard drive. :)
I use a 2TB for my directories for most things in the user folder. My SSD has Windows and program files.
