• How is quad CPU speed calculated?

So me and my friend has this debate. Me backing up my side of the facts with info from AMD overdrive, Him from idk. A few weeks ago i had a bios issue making each core of my quad core run at 800 MHZ. Since he knows a little thing about computers i told him about it. He said thats right, becuase 800mhzx4=3.2 ghz But I thought each core was 3.2 ghz.... Which after updating bios, overdrive said each was running at 3.2 ghz (When under load, As CnQ takes over when not, As you all know, and if you don't, :downs:) So whose right?

IIRC It's 3.2ghz each core. Can't be certain though.
It's 3.2 ghz for each core, your friend is an idiot.
It's per core. You can't combine them to get some sort of super speed, doesn't work like that. If you have 4 cores running at 1Ghz, running an application over 2 cores doesn't make it run at 2Ghz, The 2 cores crunch different tasks, at 1Ghz.
I think I'll give you the most common analogy for explaining this. Imagine a 4-lane highway, with a speed limit of 70 mph. Each lane represents a CPU core. If a program is just running a single thread, it can only use one lane, at 70mph. If you have a multithreaded program running 4 threads, it can run a thread on each core and process 4 times as much data at once, but it's still only "processing" at 70 mph. :iiaca:

Well, it was back when i7s and phenom IIs didn't exist and quad core's stock speeds were under 3GHz.

A faster connection just means you can pack more packets down the tubes at once.
