So I was wondering if you guys could share your finds on the most expensive PC components you have seen so far. I'm just interested in seeing how these prices will evolve during the next couple of years and to know how far the technology is at this point.
Look through pcpartpicker's parts and take a look. Older surplus high end parts sometimes cost more or the same as a newer, more efficient component

This is almost always the case. As you move up the ramp of performance, fewer and fewer parts in any given generation are produced. One reason is that the demand for high end parts is less because of price, and another reason is because of manufacturing capability. Top end parts usually are pushing the processes of the time to their upper limits and require a near perfect wafer batch to spec the high end parts.
Those parts that don't make the cut are binned to lower specs and sold as cheaper parts in the same line. Some examples of easy to find chips are Q6600s and E8400s, because they were cheap and popular and sold by the boatload. Some examples of hard to find and expensive parts would be like Q9650s, i7-870s or upper LGA1366 processors.
