Beginning in the Hobby of Robotics and Microchips (Yes i'm posting another fast thread)

Hey, I'm going to be getting an Arduino Uno with tons of parts, and I'm just starting out in the field of microchips and robotics. I have some coding experience, so i get the basics of how code functions. By coding experience, i mean I'm pretty decent with E2.
I want to create a form of basic robot, like a rover or something. Though eventually i wanted to create something I saw on TV once that was going to be used as a security robot in the future. Its pretty much a giant ball with a weighted pendulum inside that causes it to roll. It has a database of faces and it scans EVERYONE to locate terrorists or something. Though that won't happen for a while, seeing as it seems a freaking pain.
What would you guys recommend for a starting robotics project? Also, what parts would I need for that project? Thanks.
-Edit-
I just got the pack of parts, including an Uno, tons of resistors, LEDS, a servo, a DC Motor, and a few other weird parts like an LSR.
Bump? Rather get an answer.
I'd frequent some of the major Arduino Forums for code snippets and samples. A pref Board or protoboard shield might help. You can build one too. Also get a free catalog from Digikey and Allied Electronics.
It's always fun but to make sure you don't waste money make sure you're up for it first.
Start of with something simple, perhaps just a remote controlled 'robot' with two wheels to control direction. When I say remote, it doesn't have to be wireless. Just something very simple to get you used to it
