Hi there I would like to build a new computer as mine is reaching the 4 year mark, plays your steam games and wow absolutely fine but I cant push it and record things very well either. I am aspiring to make my own youtube series and would like the firepower under the bonnet to do so, I understand that the best processor available for gaming is the i5 2500k? However I have no idea how good that will be for processing videos as the i7 has hyper threading or something, is this a better all round option? I have no idea, do I wait for the ivybridge ones and if so what am I gaining?
I will need all the components and I would like a HHD and a SSD (preferably 2 HDD's if available in the price range) I will not need a case, OS, mouse or anything like that. Any help and advice would be great as I have absolutely no idea what is good any more. Going £100-200 over is okay if its worth the money, I just want to see what's available.
An i7 build with 2 HDDs and an SSD for £500? You're going to need to be more realistic with what you want in this build, or you need a bigger budget.

Im just saying what I would like, the possibility's and such who knows I might come into an extra 100-200 quid.

The i5 is perfectly capable of video processing. The i7 may do it faster, but I wouldn't spend the extra on it. If you want a really good all round card for video processing and gaming, the 2500k is more than enough. Whether you wait for the Ivy Bridges to be released is up to you, I think i'm right in thinking they'll be in a similar price bracket to their Sandy Bridge counterparts. But I'd still go with the i5 Ivy Bridge in that case. Gives you a better chance of keeping the build under budget, though I'd limit it to one HDD and a 90GB SSD. I tried to price up a system with most things you asked for and I couldn't keep it under £700. Only way you'll manage it is if you get a bigger budget or get lower quality parts.
Well I've come up with this so far, Im happy to use my HDD till I can afford to buy that stuff. I also have a 700w gaming supply on my current computer but it is around 3 years old, is it worth using or buying a new one which I have selected.
I'm not really sure what GPU to go for, thinking of the 560 ti not sure what AMD cards are good any more.

LOL don't get an OCZ. I swear those things are designed to fail just weeks after your warranty expires.
I would reccomend a GTX 460.

before this PC i had a OCZ, worked for ~6-7 years and was still going strong until i changed it
I'm trying to make a build in the same price range, I'm going to be using it to play Arma2 and do some 3d rendering.
This is what I have so far, is there anything that doesn't fit with anything else?
I was hoping to get a cooling system and overclock the cpu, but I'm already at my price cap.

I already have a mouse, keyboard, monitor (crt unfortunatly), and I was hoping to repurpose my external hdd as
the secondary drive. Its one of these: http://go.iomega.com/en-us/products/external-hard-drive-desktop/prestige-desktop-series/prestige-esata/?partner=4760
I was also hoping I could not get an optical drive and just usb install the os.
Does this look ok, and did I miss anything?
That external HDD is going to be slow as hell compared to a normal internal one at 7200rpm. There's a reason those are marketed for storing media files y'know.
I guess I should get an internal hdd then, as there probably won't be enough room on the ssd for all my programs. Other than cutting the ram amount down from 8 gigs to 4, where else could I shave off some money to make room for one?

Or might it be cheaper to just get a bigger ssd?
If I bump the ram down to 4 gigs I can get a 128 gig ssd, and still be within my price range.
I'm thinking I could do that and then just use my external drive for extra stuff I access infrequently.
Forgot to mention. That PSU is overpriced. For that price you could get a fully modular one with the exact same internals from Seasonic.

Or if you don't care about modularity you could get one from Antec that again has the same Seasonic internals but for $60 less.

Or hell. For $120 you can get a 900W HCG.

Cool, thanks. I decided to reduce the ram to 4 gigs and get a bigger ssd,
and decided to choose the non-modular PSU to save some dosh.
I'll probably order it sometime before this weekend. Here's my final build, if anyone is interested.

Looking quite nice, I will have to play around on uk sites.
OCZ ssds caused me so much pain until I configured it properly, now it runs rock solid and my computer never crashes, next time I'm getting an SSD I will stay clear from OCZ and I suggest you do as well if you're looking into getting an SSD.
I can sell you an XFX Reference 6870 for £110 shipped in the UK from Cambridge.
Parts got here, got it all set up.
Here's some pictures:

Motherboard looks like poo. Oh well, hope it runs good?
Yeah, it runs pretty well. I'm happy with it.
