• i5 build for around £350 - is it possible?

Right, so I've got about £100 from my birthday money left over and I'll have an extra £140 or so from selling my Novint Falcon (if anyone wants to buy this, let me know. It costs £150 or so for the Novint alone, £40 odd to ship and another £37 from Customs to purchase it from Novint themselves). My brother is also willing to chip in about £100 or so. Things I can reuse: - ATI Radeon HD4850 1GB (bought after my 8800GT crapped out) - 550w PSU (about 2 years old, should probably think about replacing this) - Case (ATX, pretty bad, should probably replace this too) - X-Fi Xtreme Music soundcard - Hard drives (WD 500GB Caviar Black HDD) - Monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Preferred sites: - Ebuyer - Dabs If it really just isn't possible, then can I have some suggestions on what would be a decent upgrade from the following: Intel C2D E6400 @ 2.13ghz 2GB DDR2 400mhz Ballistix ATI HD4870 1GB Gigabyte DS3-965P Thanks. :)
It should be. I5 750-£160. Motherboard £60. Ram-£100 Case-£30ish. You could drop 4gb ram for 2gb and manage a new PSU but apart from that you should be fine. Also try novatech http://www.novatech.co.uk
Thanks for the response. Would you or perhaps anyone else happen to have any motherboard reccommendations for an i5? As for manufacturer, I've always stuck with Gigabyte and they've never let me down since 2004. Edited: I think I've settled on this for the motherboard: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174499 Anyone know of some good DDR3 RAM / a 500w+ PSU / ATX case (limit £115)?
Gigabyte are a great manufacturer and they are also cheap and as for ram is 4gb a must?
4GB definitely isn't a must (I'm running on 2GB at the moment fine), but if you can squeeze it in there, go ahead. I'm thinking about these two: (£49) Kingston 2GB DDR3 1333MHZ HyperX - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169289 (£40) Antec 300 Three Hundred Case - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143854 It would leave me with about £30 for a PSU.. speaking of PSU, will a 500w one do?
I'm not to sure on the power supply but it would be best if you had 2 sticks of ram so 2x1gb so you can use the i5's dual channel controller.
Wasn't the falcon for $99 a while ago?
Wasn't the falcon for $99 a while ago?
Were they? They're $199 now including pistol grip. I got mine in November 2009 from a TF2 contest. Used it once, then put it back in it's box and it's been sitting there since.
You can't get a good PSU for powering such hardware for £30.
you could if there is a deal, but thats unlikely here in the UK I'll get u something [editline]04:11PM[/editline] Also maybe you should think about a Phenom II X4 955 instead. [editline]04:17PM[/editline] Yeh you should get a 955 cheap case decent 4gb ram 550w PSU Take you to around 400
If you go for an AMD build you can get similar performance whilst saving your cash Motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/product/193510 CPU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190673 RAM http://www.ebuyer.com/product/169488 PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152009 Comes to £336.85
^ This [editline]08:41PM[/editline] Or look for a motherboard that isnt to expensive with your 14 quid spare that has CF/SLi capability so in future you can get another 4850
I would definitely go ahead and spring for 4GB of ram. I currently have a 1156 setup and would have a ton of hard faults if I had only 2GB. Plus it makes it easier to upgrade to 8GB, just pop in two more 2GB sticks, rather than having to remove the two 1GB and buy four 2GB sticks. Also, what brand is the PSU? It can make a big difference as far as long its gonna last.
Better PSU same price http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141007

Might go for that instead, since they are relatively the same in benchmarks.
Better PSU same price http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141007
no the antec basiq series sucks ass
Why does it suck any more ass than the aforementioned OCZ unit? Hmm? The specs say it is better than the OCZ. Please back up your posts with reasons otherwise you look like an idiot. Anyone can say "such and such sucks ass". For example: All the OCZ ModXStream PSUs suck ass.
If you are going for my build and want to crossfire in the future you could get this motherboard bringing the total to £368.87 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/219204 It also has USB3 ports and should last you a long time seeing as its a brand new chipset
