I could just watch a Minecraft longplay and probably get a better experience.
It should also be noted that Rob McElhenney (one of the co-creators of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, plays Mac on the show) will be directing.

This is like asking how popular it would be in 2016 while in 2012. It's been on a popularity streak since it started development and hasn't ever really died down. At the current trend, it'll either be just as popular or slightly less.

At least the Angry Birds movie kind of makes sense.
They gave the game a plot, the movie would expand upon that plot. (I don't know if that's actually the case or not, but it makes sense)
With Minecraft though, you make the story.
