Hey FP, I feel like an idiot. Is it bad that I am taking out my DVD drive to put in my other i7 build while its on? I would think as long as it isn't transferring data it would not matter.. but.. I don't know. thanks :taco: [editline]12:59AM[/editline] may i add, I do take out the power cable first, then I take out the sata data cable :toot: :taco:
If you already did it, then put it in the other computer and see for yourself. If you haven't done it yet, then don't be lazy and turn off your computer.
Sata is usually good with hotplugging so you should be fine.
thanks, I don't have 2 SATA DVD drives, only one, and my 2 IDE ones are shitted up, and won't write a byte of data without corrupting at least one bit.
Why didnt you just turn it off?
turn what off?
The computer..
because I don't have to.
The system is made to be okay with it but the dvd drive may have issues with it. If you do it regularly just buy another one they're only $15-30USD now. It would be better to remove the data cable first though.
I'll try the sata_data cable first then.
Just turn the god damn computer off.
[QUOTE=Lego399;17894963]Just turn the god damn computer off.[/QUOTE] Why should he? He obviously has the money to waste if his computer breaks.... I mean.. He can just buy[sp]/build[/sp] a new one... Right?
the computer isn't going to break, probably just the SATA drive. I'm doing this until i get another.
SATA is hotpluggable. Try it with IDE and you'll fry the controller.
thanks [editline]03:34PM[/editline] :taco: :taco: two tacos for you
SATA is only hot-swappable if it is using AHCI mode. It also required that both the power and data connectors are SATA connectors. (I.e. The power is not a 4 pin Molex connector.) I would like to point out when connecting / disconnecting 4 pin Molex's while they are powered - Even though they are polarised it is still possible to short them out. I once ended up putting a Molex in upside down, it connected enough to blow the 5V regulation side of a DVD drive. I have also managed to successfully short out the 12V rail of my PSU across the two centre ground pins. Normally the over current protection should have protected everything, but in my case it didn't and it blew the power supply. It's easy to mess it up if you can't see the connector and have to do it by feel. Just keep this in mind. Also note that the SATA version of the power connector is designed for hot swapping and will be much more resistant to this situation.
:toot: :taco: [editline]03:49PM[/editline] I am using a SATA_power cable :toot:
Then physically it should be fine, but software wise it [i]may[/i] cause instability problems if not using AHCI mode. Of course, that's only a restart at worse.
Rodger, badger. should i put my SATA_POWER cable in first or the SATA_DATA when I put it back in? [editline]04:13PM[/editline] oh FUCKING HELL I JUST DROPPED ME BEEF JERKY IN MY CASE :bang: :froggonk:
I would personally remove power first when removing and insert power last when installing. Not sure if there's a specific order though. Google didn't come up with anything.
Why not attach both to a piece of tape, so one tug, and both come out at the same time?
I just put mine in wile the computer was on (to burn win 7( just found out I can get it from school)). But mines a laptop so it doesn't really apply.
