CPU hitting 75 celsius in idle... this can't be normal, or what? Should I be worried ?
well what is your CPU?
AMD Phenom II X4 965
That's definitely a bit high. Are you sure the heatsink is attached properly?
Yeah, just checked. Could this be the coolingpaste or something fading or ?...
No i doubt it. Is the heatsink free of dust?
Yup
Doubt it's my case fans that is the problem.. (got two 200mm fans and one 140mm).
When you touch the base of the heatsink while your computer is running, does the temperature "feel" like 75 degrees Celsius?
Also, what program did you used to check the temperature, and what heatsink do you have?
Yeah, almost burns my fingers..
I used Everest, AMD Overdrive and CPUID HWmonitor. The heatsink is the standard one that came with the cpu.
Is your CPU overclocked?
It was overclocked to 3,8GHz.. but I turned it back to it's standard values like a day ago. It's still at almost the same temperatures.
Well, I wouldn't recommend OC'ing on the stock heatsink. When it was overclocked, were the temps about the same?
Yup.
Are you sure you actually removed the OC? Did you maybe get rid of it in the BIOS and forget to save?
Removed it in both BIOS and AMD Overdrive. (Remembered to save :3:)

You really shouldn't be using AMD Overdrive. I would always recommend against doing any overclocking from in Windows. Do it from in the BIOS only.
Okay dokay, but still isn't helping for the temperatures.
Well, my guess is either the heatsink isn't working properly (due to being clogged with dust, bad compound, etc), or because you were using 2 different OCing methods it screwed something up.
hm.. better buy a new heatsink or turn to water-cooling then, but this isn't like my cpu will BURN if it stays like this for a while?
It will lower it's lifetime.
I'd get a new way to cool it.
No, your CPU will be fine. I'd check first and try cleaning out any dust, and checking again in your BIOS to make sure the settings are fine. Secondly, before doing a new heatsink, it would be cheaper to replace the thermal compound. And I personally would never recommend watercooling. Yes, it cools better, but I've always found it to be more trouble than it's worth. Also tends to be a lot more expensive.
Well, money isn't really a problem here xD.. so I think I'll just buy myself a new heatsink :3: .. Zalman here I come :smug:
A brand doesn't mean anything

Sure does

:psyduck:
Maybe in the case of heatsinks, sure, but it sure matters in almost every other place when it comes to PC components.
Pretty sure that Zalman is better than some other brands..
AMD stock heatsinks suck. Here is mine:

Works like a charm for my Phenom II 940.
Keep in mind though that with the price of the heatsink.. your basically paying almost 35% for another CPU, maybe even over half if you want to get a dual core.

Though it puts you a few dollars over if you count the shipping. :gonk:

You need to compare the MODELS, not just the brand.
Way ahead of you :smug:
