• PCIe 2.1 card in a PCIe x16 slot

Everywhere online I have read that a PCIe 2.1 video card inserted into a PCIe x16 slot from an older motherboard will cause the card to run at a bottlenecked speed, however I can't find out what effect this has and nowhere seems to state how much of a bottleneck this will be. Does anybody here know or seen the effects of it and is it badly noticeable? I'm hoping to run the latest PC games and the only component pulling me back is the video card so I don't want to have to upgrade to a 2.1 compatible motherboard if it isn't worth it.
It will run at a slower speed, it will decrease performance 5%. Max. Unless you have like a 5970 or GTX 480 or something
Thanks, only 5% sounds manageable to be Probably helps to say actually, the card I'm thinking of is a ATI Radeon HD 5830 1024MB http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI+5800+Series/XFX+ATI+Radeon+HD+5830+%22AVP+Edition%22+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=40295 (may not be buying it from there but that's the card)
Take a look at this: this might help. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_5870_PCI-Express_Scaling/25.html Your PCI-E slot is a 1.0 @ 16x, right? Then look at the results for 8x, since those tests were done on 8x PCI-E 2.0
I'm guessing it's a 1.0 though it's always just listed as x16. If I'm reading those graphs correctly it looks like it will be fine, and that is a higher card in the range too. Cheers, that's perfect.
