Hello all,
My dad wants to upgrade his old computer,he still insists that buying a new one is out of the question. Can anyone help me choose the right parts for him?
His computer:

I want to upgrade the RAM and the graphics card,I will format his computer so an OS is not a problem.
His budget is around £ 100.
This is his motherboard:

(Please tell me if that is the correct motherboard as the one he has is named P4S800-MX SE)
I can only order from www.amazon.co.uk
Thanks.
100 pounds is a fairly small budget, are you sure you can't encourage him to pop up to about 500 pounds for a new computer?
it would be a lot faster...
I'd probably get 2gb of RAM, though with your budget that's about all you could afford..

I'm australian, so I don't know how much difference there is in price for parts here and there... I would suggest 800$ aus for a new computer, so I assumed that's about 500 quid.
Well with about ~ 100 pounds I can upgrade his ram to 2GB and get him a moderate graphics card, but I asked here to see whats the best parts I can get.
I was actually lucky to get the opportunity to upgrade his computer,as he usually says that it's perfectly fine and not slow at all.He doesn't want to get a new computer though.
Does he play games?
I didn't suggest a graphics card because generally you don't see parents playing GTA4/Mass Effect etc.
He watches alot of youtube videos, his SiS 661FX makes all videos very stuttery. So we would want a graphics card that can handle 360p videos that run smoothly (Geforce 5 series/6 series?)
I'd probably aim for the 7 series, but yeah I suppose 6 series would work just fine.
I'm suprised that card can't even handle low quality youtube, but yeah I suppose that needs upgrading more than the RAM.
So if you could RAM and GPU that would be good..
But I'd be pushing to get him an upgrade in a year or two..
That SiS is onboard (motherboard),and it can handle videos at 240p videos but thats just too low quality.
Does your PSU have enough power to cover an upgraded GPU?
Yes that is my main concern, his power supply is only 250W.

Total is £112.74 with free shipping. Should make a huge improvement. 480p would be no problem at all after the upgrade.
Do that.. I was sort of confused by the RAM, but then I came back and looked at your mobo and got why..
Hopefully he doesn't stick with this "amazon only" thing.
Sorry missed the part about amazon.

Total is £115.35 excluding delivery (likely to be an additional £15~)
Socket 478 is really, really old now. IMO he should just wait and buy a new one, money is wasted on that one. AGP cards is piss expensive in £/performance ratio, so those 100£ are going into nothing... I do have a 5800 somewhere in my house... I could try to bake it and send it, no money needed just cover the shipping (or what the hell it's called).
Well,is the 5800 AGP?

Yeah I thought that too, he should jump up and throw a bit more cash for a completely new one.
