I'm planning on upgrading my computer then giving the old parts, in a 'new computer' to my brother.
I'll be buying these parts:
CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case - $119
ASUS Radeon HD6950 DirectCU II 1GB - $289
Seagate Barracuda 1TB - $109
Thermaltake EVO Blue 750W -$152
Intel Core i7 2600K - $339

ASUS Radeon HD6970 DirectCU II 2GB
Intel Core i5 750
ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe Motherboard
8GB of DDR3 RAM
Coolermaster 650W PSU
I plan on ending up with these configurations, bold means its new:
My computer:
CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case

Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 16GB
Thermaltake EVO Blue 750W
My old hard drives
Brothers computer:
CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case
ASUS Radeon HD6950 DirectCU II 1GB
Intel Core i5 750

Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Sound good?
$1422 worth of new parts with shipping
I'll be getting my stuff from http://www.pccasegear.com
Get an i7 2600k or an i5 2500k.
DirectCU II coolers are heavy and will bend the PCB, fucking some solders up. Or that is what I have heard.
But they're really quiet, would it be okay if I just put something in there to 'hold it up?' I've got the 6970 DirectCU II in my computer right now and I've had no issues.
I figure I'll get the i7-2600 since I don't need the overclocking ability.
Get the K version, it overclocks really easily.
Get a 2600K. Not the 2700K
Ok, is the motherboard and ram fine?
You should take out that Seagate 1TB hard drive and find a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB if possible. Swap the motherboard to a ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3. I really doubt you need a Core i7 2600k and 16GB of RAM unless you're doing some extensive software editing and rendering, if you're just gaming then cut it down to a Core i5 2500k and 8GB of RAM maximum. Unless you plan to use the stock cooler included with the CPU (if it isn't an OEM version) then get an NH-D14. I'm sure you can get a better PSU somewhere for less of the price. Use the leftover cash from the changes and get yourself a 60-128GB SSD.
I will be using it for rendering, I'll be hooking up those two computer, plus my three servers to make a rudimentary render farm.
I've never overclocked anything before, is it worth it, can it be safely done?
I hear that the 932 is a better case than the 922, is it worth the extra $50? Or even the HAF X, an extra $80?

Yah the 932 is a big improvement solely because the 922 is a mid tower and the 932 is a full tower. More space allows for more features and better airflow. Also overclocking is fairly safe with non stock cooling.

Oh also a 6950 1GB is not worth $289. It's only around 6% faster than the $219 GTX 560 Ti.

Jesus the GTX 560 Ti is a lot more in Australia than here. Disregard that.
I'm going to order everything tomorrow. Getting the HAF X, will the two upper fans prevent me from maintaining a positive pressure within it?
I see no SSD's in here. HDD's are also very expensive now because of the flooding.
Also, on the HAFX, just switch the fans to intake on top to maintain positive instead of negative. Although if you're using air coolers I would prefer the ones on top to be exhaust.
Actually, instead of a HAF X or a HAF 932, I can get the HAF 922 and an OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD instead.
OK it's all ordered.

Very good decision, enjoy that SSD :)
I was going to say bad decsion, thought it was 60gb but if its 120 you can do some more with it.
I figure to prolong it's lifespan I should move the temp files, the caches, and my drop box folder off the 'C' drive. I'll have to reinstall windows anyway, are there any other precautions I should take?

Delete hibernation, download ssd-tweaker optimize the first time it boots up, and then uhh, minimize your page file to about 1-2GB depending on your ram and applications. Don't worry too much about appdate temp/cache, worry about your win-rar extraction temp folders though.
I did 3TB writes on each vertex 2 50GB drives i had, I had 2 of them in raid-0, still has 99% life span, ended up selling them to get another Agility 3 120GB.

My download manager stores the streams of files in the AppData folder, so I figure that'll cause excessive writes.
Since I have 16gb of ram, should I move my page file to another drive? I mean, it's not going to get used, so I don't need any 'performance boost' of it being on an SSD, so that's just wasted space there.

Which download manager are you using?
It really depends, if you're that worried, then move it to a different drive, but the page file needs to be created at every first boot, if you have a HDD that is certain to not have much reads/writes to from it, then place it on that, if not, just place 512MB minimum with growth up to 1-2GB.

At 16GB of ram you could just delete the page file and see no adverse effects. I don't even use one with 8GB.

It really depends on the applications that you use. Some applications just require a page file for some stupid reason.

Really? The more you know eh. I haven't encountered one yet but if I do I'll just put the page file back.

Yeah... :(
Vegas pro was one that I had issues with page off the hand. Some Adobe applications may do this as well.
Windows also writes some small stuff into the Page file as far as I'm concerned. I just find it stupid that it ends up making the page file as the SAME SIZE AS YOUR RAM for default. That means with 24GB of ram, that's nearly 48GB down the drain in total for Hibernation and Page.
LOL I think I might just end up doing a Windows Image or something on my old SSD's to help preserve the lifespan of my new one when I do the install.. however.
I use Internet Download Manager, it stores the steams of files it's downloading in the AppData folder, then reconstructs the file and moves it to the destination. It's not something that's limited by my hard drive speed so I may as well move it to another drive. In fact it would probably gain performance if I move it to the drive I download stuff to, since it only has to move the files instead of copying them.
I think I'll just move everything I can to other drives, whether or not there's a performance boost, it'll certainly free up space.

Got it.
How many parts are you breaking it down to? If you have a decent connection ( lower than 100ms to the DL servers ) you don't need more than 4 parts to be honest. I usually use 2-3 with JDownloader.

I don't have a decent connection most of the time, IDM uses 16 parts and I've found it's the only download manager to max out my connection.

Hmm, could you list your settings ( OS, specs, HDD, network toplogy, modem, router, ISP etc )?
More often than you think your HDD/network stack/OS is more of a bottleneck then your connection.
I use IDM and in the options you can change the temporary download directory.
Windows 7, specs are listed above, I've got a NetComm NB5plus4W router, my ISP is TPG.
With flashget I could only get 500KB/s from rapidshare for example, with IDM I get 1MB/s.

Interesting.
Could be either your router, or just your ISP as you've mentioned. What tier are you on?
also 500kbps, are you sure? That's ONLY 50KB/s
I mean 500KB/s, with IDM I get 1MB/s.
Well fuck, I don't think the cooler fits over the ram - stupid large Corsair Vengeance heat sinks.
I'll install the stock cooler for now.
