It could also indicate that your textures are horribly unoptimized. Just sayin~
Kinda hopeful that this helps. I really enjoyed the game but the stuttering while driving is irritating. 1GB VRAM to blame.

A texture is a texture, if you want variety, then there is going to be a lot of them. I'd be surprised if they aren't already using compressed textures, they're kinda limited other than that unless the reduce the number.
At least they're trying. The game is nice, so far, but more optimization would make it a gem.
Next gen my ass.
Lack of unified memory? Yeah, no shit, all PC's lack that. You should have fixed that for the PC version before releasing it. It should have been delayed 6 years instead of 6 months, maybe then it would match the hype they created.
It's like they release it and wait to see how big the backlash is before they wait to get off their asses and do something. Still, hope it works out well.
To get things straight:
People are complaining watch dogs not being like in E3 gameplay trailer or that it doesn't have stuff GTA has. I agree about E3 footage, but many games were scripted during E3 to make it look nice.
GTA has a totally different engine, way better than Watch Dogs. So it CAN'T have all the stuff GTA has.
I am very impressed with that hacking stuff. When you check random people on the street, I haven't seen a single person that has the same work or cash balance, they are all unique. I didn't play Watch Dogs a lot, but so far it's a very enjoyable experience, except some minor lag problems I have. (Due to my PC)
tl:dr:
Watch Dogs is a fun game, but don't expect it to be GTA. It has some graphical difficulties, but what matters the most is how fun it is.
I think it's a case of them developing for new systems and trying to make use of the new hardware but failing horribly because they have no idea what they are doing.
They were aware that PC's didn't have unified memory as opposed to next gen consoles in the first place so they should have taken action then to try to make the PC version optimised for the PC platform with separate system RAM and graphics RAM.
Good that they're putting in work post release though...

The engine (Disrupt) was made by Ubisoft specifically for Watch Dogs, "The engine doesn't support it" isn't an excuse when you made it
Especially since some of the missing things are really basic stuff, like bullet impacts
If "supporting PC is an incredibly complex task" then why not set the release date at a place where you know this support will be readily available?
I'd rather have to wait 5 months more than console for a fixed game than get the same release date or close and get a shitty half-assed game
"lol what shit devs putting out piece of trash game they never cared about"

you do realize how hypocritical that is right
everyone throws their shirts down and the forum people start beating their chests when a pc game dares not to be released the same time as consoles
does anyone even have an idea of what optimisation is anymore????

Considering he said "I" instead of everyone indicates he would rather wait, and so would I. I'm sick of buying incomplete games. Poor optimisation = unfinished to me.
Just because the PC doesn't have unified memory that doesn't mean you shouldn't have set a baseline. Not everyone could run it, so pick your minimum system requirements and try to aim for that.
Next gen my ass.

What's to "fix"? Obviously the PC version doesn't require unified memory or it simply wouldn't run.
What he's getting at, is that on the console release they have a single unified pool for any type of content (Which can be managed as a single "blob"), while on the PC it's segmented off, you can't load map data into VRAM so this is one area where PCs are sub-par compared to consoles.

Sure at first people are gonna get mad, like with Dark Souls 2. But eventually people realize that waiting a couple of months is worth it, instead of getting a half assed product.
And Dark Souls 2 for PC runs like a charm.
Players can try turning down their texture quality, AA and resolution to prevent the lag/stutter occurring
wow thanks never would have known

my ass this is bullshit
have you even tried to run GTAIV?

The shit memory management?
I know what unified memory is or I wouldn't have mentioned it, they are using a lot more VRAM than is available on most PC's instead of moving it in to system memory. Sure consoles have an advantage in that they have the unified memory, but PC's generally have more processing power so it's not an issue moving it to system ram.
The devs want to fix their mistakes, better crucify them.
It could also indicate that your textures are horribly unoptimized. Just sayin~
It's probably the memory management. For many people with stuttering options the game works fine at first, and then it progressively gets worse, especially if you quickly turn around, but not so much if you stand still. That usually means means the game has difficulties loading in elements, but not actually rendering them, so maybe something starts clogging up the pipes or the game isn't smart about what common assets to keep at the ready and what rarer assets to forget about more quickly.
wow thanks never would have known [about lowering AA/res/tex quality for big performance boosts]
Please don't be so ignorant.
You didn't know about that stuff from the point you touched your computer case, you learned about it because you experimented a lot, you googled for a solution like it's found here, or some game/settings manager had a tooltip. Not everyone's made the same experiences in life as you, so not everyone magically knows about system power hogs just because you do.
A bit of walking in someone else's shoes, please. Article and tweets aren't being custom tailored for you.
I suppose supporting PC is really hard while supporting the consoles that are based on PC hardware is a piece of cake
sure
nice

It's not that simple.

exactly. Similiar components, but used in a completely different way
It could also indicate that your textures are horribly unoptimized. Just sayin~
To be honest, seems like they've just got really bad caching in which they don't correctly move between vram and ram.
I don't get all the backlash he's getting for those tweets. He explained why the problem is occurring without marketing speak, he said what can be done to improve performance and they are also working on a patch.
And it's not like they released it completely unplayable. Even with just 2GB VRAM and textures on high it looks good and is very playable at 45-60 FPS.

architecture used is totally different ok
exactly. Similiar components, but used in a completely different way
Doesn't mean shit, you don't seem to understand that the whole architecture of a console is different compared to a PC.

How is that hypocritical? I've never said I'd rather not wait?
I like how no one ever mentioned Unified Memory before, and now every other post is.
Facts are, Ubisoft made this engine, and it doesn't work on PC like it's supposed to, it's their fault. Period. They didn't license it and find out half way through development
