Going off to college in a couple weeks and i'm gonna need a laptop. Now to keep it short and simple, here's what i'm looking for, in order of priority:
1) Obviously basic necessities for college work, adequate speed w/ word processing and the like.
2) No more than $750-800 pricetag tops.
3) Fast enough to do more leisurely laptop stuff like youtube and the like, or even a few games like MC or even Gmod, etc.
So what are my best options?
Do you have a desktop?
What kind of college work will you do and will be required to do on your laptop (ties into the above, if you need photoshop you could just use your desktop for example, or use your desktop to finish up/polish work you start on your laptop)?
Are you needing to do all your computing related activities on said laptop?
Do you absolutely want to be able to run 3D intensive games like gmod and to a certain extent minecraft (which requires a video card on some level to run smooth) on said laptop?
I have a desktop at home, but I obviously won't be home other than every couple weekends, and the desktop isn't coming with me, even if there is space. I'm going to need to be able to do all "computing related activities" on it then, yes. I seriously doubt I will have to do anything more advanced for school than word processing and some excel/powerpoint stuff. And absolutely want? No, but if it's possible within the price range it'd certainly be a big plus for a time killer.
I'm in the same situation as you, with a slightly higher budget bout 1000 bucks Canadian.
Maybe you could try looking for laptops with i7-2630QM 2.0GHz and GT 500M series graphics?

or maybe this.
I'm no expert, but to the best of my knowledge, one of these will fulfill what you need/want. Someone, for the love of God, please fix any mistakes I may make.

For the Canadian, here's something a little under what you suggested looking for. But, to the best of my knowledge, you won't get those specs for that budget.

Actually this appears to come close.
Thanks, i rather not go for the G7 series :P 17" laptop for college seems a bit too big to carry around. 15" was recommended to me and it seems like a decent size too.
I found this :D it's perfect!

One thing I noticed when searching around is that laptops with the 2nd gen i7 + GT 500 graphics tend to only have a few hours of battery life (maybe only 1 hour?) so i'm not sure if I want to go with it. the i5's are better on the battery but then again it's only a dual core :/ not nuff power for me
update: K i found this to be interesting. Forget about the i7, the battery life with those turn me off.
take a look at this.

Don't know where you heard that 2nd gen i7's have such bad battery life, I have an i7 2630 and it can run for around 4 hours without dedicated graphics.

If you don't mind me asking, what laptop do you have?

It even has 4GB of ram, a 7200rpm hdd, and Win7 64 professional.
For battery life problems, keep two batteries. Use one for home use were you can leave the recharger plugged in all day. Use the second one when you're out , only recharge it when it's drained. I doubt they'll be any big problems with battery life on that. But if you want to maximize your charge this is the way I'd do it.
If anyone's interested, I chose this. Seems like a great laptop for what i'm looking for due to the huge sale.
