I'm glad it wasn't set in Japan, the feel the Dunwall city gave off felt as though it was more "alive" comparative to any real life location. With the creation of a fictional city, it allows the creator's mind to take full grip of his or her imagination. In a fictional city, it doesn't have to conform to logical standings that we have (whale blubber powers everything! :v:). If it were to take place in Japan, it would have too many themes and visuals that would be too alike. With Dunwall, it is a city that was created with a uniqueness that no historical relic could even stand up to.
A game like Dishonored or Assassin's Creed set it Japan though would be simply amazing, however.
The thing I absolutely loved about Dunwall is that most of it's locations, whether it'd be interior or exterior; actually felt and looked like they could actually exist somewhere They got those proportions nailed down
It could have been interesting if they kept the Japanese setting but infused it with the whalepunk stuff they have going on with it's current aesthetic.
This explains all the excessive whaling then.
