So I just purchased and set up my new iPhone plan, what does Facepunch recommend I do to it to maximize what I get out of it? Things like good apps, custom firmware or whatnot.
Should've gotten an Android device if you wanted custom firmware.
Whatever, I received it as a gift so if I don't get to have complete control of the device I don't mind.
Whoops didn't outline that in the OP
..
or he can jailbreak?
I personally don't like jailbreaking. It raped my battery life and I didn't find it necessary.
Jailbreaking just allows unsigned apps and installs Cydia, it can't rape your battery unless you install all kinds of crap from Cydia.

What's the point of jailbreaking if you don't do anything with it?
Please, explain. :colbert:

You aren't meant to install every mobile substrate addon under the fucking sun. That is probably what killed your battery.
Well I just Jailbroke the thing, what now?

Even just installing SBSettings on my old iPhone 3G hammered the battery in comparison to stock iOS.

Custom themes? You can get more out of the gaming side as well. A bit of Quake?
I don't feel I need to jailbreak mine it does everything I want and is a handy device straight out of the box.
I do a lot of travelling around the default maps has saved my ass many times over.
But yeah lucky to get that as a gift don't get messing it up. Make sure you know what you are doing.
Not very satisfied with the themes on Cydia actually, and the fact that I have to pay to unlock an app that lets me make custom ringtones or whatever. Looking into making my own and whatnot.
EDIT: Also I haven't even installed anything from Cydia and I can see a visible decrease in my battery efficiency, what gives?
Most of the themes are fucking horrible on Cydia without adding some good repos. I don't know any good theme repos personally, but check out http://macthemes.net/forum/viewforum.php?id=24 and there are some pretty good ones on deviantart too if you look around.
Glad I didn't jailbreak if it kills your battery. iPhone battery isn't that amazing since if you're a heavy user you need to charge once to twice a day.

Actually double checking I was just being too paranoid, turns out I had a bunch of apps multitasking which drained it. I haven't had the chance to compare it with great detail.
Anyways I heard of something called SBSettings, thinking about installing it. Anyone with experience got any recommendations?

It's great just get it now. You just drag your finger sideways over the top bar (with your signal, carrier etc.) and you can disable/enable 3G, wifi, brightness etc. withput having to navigate the settings app. It also lets you close hidden apps and free up your memory so your phone becomes faster.
Tl;dr version: Just get it.
Workin on it, any other recommendations? Just trying to work on some themes that don't suck.
Install iDroid.
your battery life has gone to shit anyway.
Yeah it pretty much has, what exactly is the cause of this anyways? Does running the Jailbroken firmware use more power? Or is it the stuff that you install from Cydia constantly running in the background that does?
I have no idea, but the opposite happens on my droid after a root and custom ROM.
I get an extra couple of hours battery life.

custom rom != jailbreaking.
Jailbreaking allows the original (i)OS to run unsigned third party apps, and using those to build on top of the original OS. A custom rom is basically a rethink of the underlying OS, and extraneous shit is cut out.
Also IMO jailbreaking isn't worth. My iPhone 3G was jailbroken the entire time I had it, and I jailbroke my iPhone 4 for about a week. The hit on battery life and overall stability of your phone (not iOS, but apps in general crashing) makes it not worth it for me. The only thing I ended up missing was LockInfo, which is basically ripped off now in iOS 5 anyway. All the themes look shit to me, and none of the apps really appeal to me. BiteSMS was good, but I can live without it.

Surely if the OS doesn't check to see if the apps are signed, it would require less processor time and therefore less power.

Its probably because the apps are poorly coded or are operating at all times when normally in iOS, this isn't the case.

You could also resize all your windows on a laptop to be 1px less in height so your GPU has less to render to save power

You are truly a visionary in mobile computing.

you are ridiculous
I always run tests per each iOS on my iPhone 4 - I've found that a jailbroken iOS 4.3.3 actually has fantastic battery life with Switchermod, Winterboard and BiteSMS installed (Along with a couple of small tweaks). On standby, it would drain 0.4% each hour. Without, it could be potentially a little bit better but without Switchermod, you're always closing "recent" applications and not just the ones currently running.
Basically, it doesn't drain your battery until you have things like SBSettings installed. I avoid that shit like nothing else because I've observed real word results on the drain it causes.
Is there something like SBSettings that doesn't rape the battery?

Explain why giving it less to do will use more energy. I'd really like to hear this.
