I've been given a 2007 Golf from work and it has an iPod dock in the arm rest, does anyone know what kind of iPod goes in it?

I need a new mp3 player so might as well get one that fits in there
Im really not to sure how wide it is, but any Ipod/Iphone except the Iphone 5.
It seems that only the iPod classic would fit that plug, but you can get cables/adapters that allow you to use the newer Apple devices.
Damn iPods are expensive, thanks for the info though
Well, if you've got an Android phone, you can get a DockBoss+ and plug your phone right into the dock with that. It can also work with pretty much any music player, and if it's got a Micro USB charger (which is standard for android phones now a days), you can even charge your player. I'm not sure if it works with the media controls though, as in changing songs and play/pause.

DockBoss+ costs about $30.

All the Ipods/Iphones except the new Ipod and Iphone 5 have the same power plug, its just a matter of if there is enough room in it for something like the Ipod Classic. I think you wouldnt have any troubles using an Ipod Nano with it.
Yeah, but since he was considering getting a new music player, I assumed he was going to buy a new one, and out of those, only the classic has the right plug. If he gets an older iPod, it'll most likely fit, but the classic is a little big I think. Or he could get the DockBoss+ for $30, and use any mp3 player.
The Dockboss sounds quite good actually, would this be the same? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grom-iPhone-Female-Extension-Cable/dp/B004VCWM3G/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
Yup, that would be roughly the same. The only difference is that you don't get a charger. Turns out you can't control the music playback with the DockBoss either, so you're not missing anything there. (and DockBoss apparently doesn't work with VW at all)
That looks like a Nano's spacing, with the dock plug offset for the headphone jack.
Put a ruler or business card or something up for perspective, then we could help you out better. Looks like a nano slot to me, though.

Actually the size of the connector leads me to believe any iPod besides the iPhone 5 could fit.

I doubt that's a headphone jack, iPods and iPhones provide sound through the 30-pin connector (and I bet it does a whole lot of other stuff as well. In comparison a USB cable has 4 pins, and just think about all the stuff it can do...) Besides, most (if not all) iPods and iPhones are really thin from the connector and to the back. The iPod Touch for example is as thin, if not thinner, than the iPod Nano.
