Wanting to build my first gaming computer, need advice
9 replies, posted
Basically I have nowhere to begin. I'm looking for someone to help me or build one for me (not literally, just need help finding parts). I'm wanting to have a machine that can play Battlefield 3 on high-ultra, or any new games that come out.
I'm wanting it to be as cheap as possible, because my family doesn't have a lot of money right now and I don't have a job.
If anyone would like to talk over steam or something, add me. Or just post in the thread, that works too.
A couple of things.
1. What is your budget (the most influencing factor of the build)?
2. Do you need an operating system?
3. Can you re-use any parts of your current pc (also list them)?
Stating a budget will help us. You should also give us your current computer specs (including your power supply model) so we know what we can salvage from it.
For now here's a newegg list:

Total price: $520.93 (not including shipping)
This excludes the OS, DVD drive and Hard drive if you can salvage them from your current computer. (If your DVD drive uses an IDE interface then you will have to buy a SATA DVD drive. The same goes for your hard drive.) The listed heatsink should also come with free thermal paste. If you really are that tight for money you could remove the heatsink and instead use the stock heatsink included with the CPU and save $30.
Here are the extras if you need those:

Just wanted to note. Battlefield 3 doesn't seem to discriminate between a core i3 2105 to a core i5 2600k in performance. The CPU listed is enough to play the game smoothly. The Radeon 6870 is also able to play Battlefield 3 at an average of 50fps at 1900x1200 on high settings.
I was going to buy this for christmas, but someone in another thread said that prebuilts were a bad idea. So around 500-700 is my price range. I was going to buy a separate GPU and PSU also.

Prebuilts are generally a bad idea since they usually skip and cut corners on quality components. That specific prebuilt is also a bad idea since it has an AMD bulldozer CPU. The GPU itself also averages 30fps on medium settings at 1080p in Battlefield 3. Replacing the GPU and PSU on top of that will also add extra to the price.

I don't think so, I bought this computer at Best Buy 3 years ago for $300.

That HDD could be reused as a main drive, unless you want to get a new one and then use that as the old drive.
I was hoping more or less someone could build me a computer for 5-700 dollars.
I know jack shit about computers and I need help with this.

A couple of last minute suggestions.
1. Use your current dvd drive, it still works and there is no need to spend extra on a limited budget.
2. If you don't need an operating system then remove that from the build and place this in there instead of the current gpu I have listed.

3. Use your current hdd as a second hard drive, Seagate stuff is generally pretty reliable so their is no reason to get rid of it until it fails/becomes obsolete.

Alright thanks man! I'll try and see if I can order all of that (with shipping and all)
