• Low/Mid-range system - Build or Buy?

'ello! I'm looking to hook my sister up with a new desktop. It'd be mostly simple stuff. Web browsing, movies, possibly some light gaming(Portal). Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor, etc. don't need to be included, but we need Windows and she wants a Blu-ray player. Target budget is something around $500 USD, but the lower the better. Is it worth it to build a lower-end system vs buying a pre-built? I'm not hugely familiar with the lower-end stuff. Any builds or suggested parts would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I'd build it, bloatware sucks
I find prebuilts are usually pretty durable but building your own PC is more rewarding and can even be fun. Of coarse since you're building a new PC you will wan't new components and not last generation stuff so here it goes. I think you should order from NCIX, they're Canadian but ship to the US for free on orders over $50. AMD 6670 @ $97 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60741 FX-6100 @ $134 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=64406&promoid=1069 ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus @ $57 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=67948 G.Skill Ripjaws X (2x4GB 1866Mhz) @ $65 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58519 Antec Sonata III w/ 500W Neo Eco PSU @ $114 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=24294 Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB @ $89 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63571&promoid=1069 ASUS Bluray/DVD combo drive @ $66 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=64648 Windows 7 64 SP1 @ $89 USD http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=45271&promoid=1069 I'm revising it for a better price.. but Windows and bluray is going to be alot... you should probably just get Netflix instead of a bluray reader for HD movies. Also remember that the cheaper quality components you buy the less longevity and more noise.

Thanks though. Any other suggestions? It doesn't have to be fancy. We were going to just go for a prebuilt, but I thought I might be able to get a better price if I built it.
