University Student looking to build own PC - £500 Budget

Ok so here is my situation.
I'm in my first year of uni and to avoid buying a TV license I got the Samsung T220 Monitor for my xbox which works perfectly. I also got a pair of good speakers to go with it.
It then dawned upon me that I have everything necessary for building my own pc without having to fork out on the other bits. I have the screen, a keyboard, mouse, speakers. All I need now is the computer itself.
So I'd say I have £500 to spend, I already have MSOffice and I'd take up the Windows 7 £30 offer.
This is a gaming PC at heart, would quite like to play games like Borderlands and stuff on it. Am I deluded or is this entirely possible?
Thanks for the help, I come because I haven't really been keeping up with technology that much (best I've heard is the 9800GTX but I'd imagine that's pretty old now).
