• New Graphics Card to Replace HD4550
    51 replies, posted
I currently have an Ati Radeon HD 4550 and i need a replacement, with a budget of £70. My current specs are: Core 2 Duo @2.4ghz and 4GB of RAM. I can't xfire, so that is out of the question. The card doesn't have to be ATI, im ok with Nvidia too. I just want something that will give a noticeable (hopefully very) difference to my HD4550 when i'm recording gameplay, and just playing games themselves. The reason i'm not doing it myself is because I haven't got a clue what to pick, and I may aswell just ask you guys out for help. Thankyou :)

Get that powercolor one. How often have you had your GPU break.
UK 5670's http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190648 512mb Version £70 But if your monitor is 1680x1050 or greater then save up and go with http://www.ebuyer.com/product/189620 1gb Version £88
4850 got better performance... And 5670 is to weak to handle DX11 well, there's no point to save like, what? 10£?
4850 is better
4850's are expensive in the UK for some reason, like £150, unless he finds one on ebay.
What are you on? You can get a 4870 for under £100.. http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI+4000+Series/XFX+ATI+Radeon+HD+4870+512MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=39070&source=googleps
Also graphics memory doesn't really matter till 1920x1080 and up, and that's for the new games.
And then it will completely obliterate the performance.
My monitor is just a 21" 1280x1024 Dell monitor, so I guess it looks like I'm going for the 4850. Thanks guys. [editline]03:51PM[/editline] Actually, if I can get the extra money (which i might be able to) is there any point in getting the 1GB version of the 5670? Or will it have no difference to the 512mb 5670 on a 1280x1024 monitor?

So I should just go with the 4850 512mb? [editline]03:57PM[/editline] Wow, £130 on www.dabs.com for a 4850.
Yes, and get this one: http://www.micomonline.co.uk/products.asp?partno=HD-485X-YNFC&go But it is worth noting that the 4870 is only around £20 more.
Isn't that much better, but why not jump to the 4890? It should be noted that the 4870 requires a good deal better PSU, than the 4850... And 512Mb will be fine on your monitor. Devils number in postcount.. :woop:
Oh yeah, PSU's. It's a standard dell psu that i have so i can't get one that needs an extra cable to plug it in.
Wait, what. Standard Dell? That's not even going to run a 4850, sorry. You see, when Dell designed your PC they didn't allow headroom for upgrades - just enough power for the original components.

This is odd, when I bought my H4830 a year ago for £90 I could get a HD4830 for £110. [editline]04:14PM[/editline] This 4870 is £120: http://www.okobe.co.uk/ws/product/ASUS+EAH48702DI1GD5+Radeon+4870+1GB+GDDR5+SDRAM+Graphics+Card/1000023643?ref=1q4bs [editline]04:15PM[/editline] And this 4830 is £55: http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=39110&tid=frooct Both seller ratings seem decent on Google.
The HD5670 on dabs.com says that the recommended psu is 400w, can i get away with 305?
No.. Most you are getting on that PSU is a 4670, which is pretty bad. If you want to upgrade you are probably going to need to take the CPU, HD, RAM and DVD drive and move them to a new case, with a new motherboard and new PSU. Blame Dell.
The HD5670 on dabs.com says that the recommended psu is 400w, can i get away with 305?
I run a HD4830, and a Core 2 Pent with a 1Ghz Overclock with a 430w PSU, but to be honest you should get a better PSU because that sounds like some old OEM psu whereas mine is a hiqh quality Antec PSU which I took from a server.
Get a new PSU. Or save up for a new comp.
Save up for a new comp.
Yeah I'm probably going to have to start saving to build one myself then. Oh well I may aswell just get something else for my birthday. Thanks guys.
In guessing that the OP's power supply gives something like 16A on the 12V rail, he can still run a 4850 or 4770. These are wattages taken at the wall with a core i7 975. It should run comfortably... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-4770,2281-13.html And don't say "ohh the comp is gona explode!" shut up please. I've run an athlon 3200 w/ a 1650pro on a dell power-supply with just a 10A rail. Ran like that for 2 months and nothing happened all while I was maxing it out. In case you didn't know - 12v x 10a = 120w. My system was pulling closer to 130. (theoretically)

I happen to know that the max output on the 12V of that 305W PSU is 264W. It's uncomfortably close for a 4850. I would recommend a card with lower power draw, a 4770 for example.
a 4850 and i7 975 max out at 226W. and that's at the wall.... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-4770,2281-13.html the psu should be able to sustain that comfortably, probably takes up 160 or 170 on full load with a c2d 6600
