I have a 500 GB hdd with my windows installation on it, and I just purchased a 1 TB hdd upgrade. I made a bit by bit copy of the old drive to the new one using norton ghost. It appeared to work when I put the new drive in, but upon getting to the welcome screen (XP), no user accounts would load. ctrl alt delete x2 didn't work either. So I tried using ubuntu to simply copy the windows folders over from one drive to the other. The same things happen, no accounts load.
What can I do to remedy this?

Also I should mention that it's not a problem actually copying, it just doesn't seem to be functioning properly. All the files and what not are identical in both file systems, just some nagging problem is stopping the new drive from loading the user accounts properly.
This may sound stupid and boring, but try running this in the command prompt:
COPY /D /V /-Y /L X:\ Y:\
Where X is your old drive and Y is the new.
If it's not a problem with copying, then make sure that EVERYTHING is verified during/after the copy.
Thank you I'll try it now. What exactly does it do?

Nevermind I read up on the copy command. Thanks the info. I'm running a complete copy now, hopefully it works.

The only worries I have is the fact that certain system files are locked while the OS is in use, which is why I used ubuntu to completely copy one drive to the other. But we'll see.
Google Clonezilla and use that to make a 1:1 copy of the drive. You won't be able to copy system files while in Windows.
Clonezilla did the trick. I'm just surprised copying the files over in other outside Windows environments didn't seem to work. Thanks for the help guys.
