8600GT 3 Years Ago - What is the Nvidia Equivalent Now?
80 replies, posted
Okay 3 years ago I got a DELL PC with a 8600GT and today, it died. I am now looking for todays equivalent of a 8600GT 3 years ago, preferably Nvidia and something that will likely be comptabile, not completely sure of the motherboard, will update when I know.
£50 limit, £55 or 60 at max
No fanboysim please. Anyway look at G210, ATi 4350/4550, 9400 GT, and the 9500 GT.

4650 HD
I think this is a little better than the 9500GT yet cheaper. Also, what do you do on your computer and what is it's resolution?

Or this. 4670s are pretty decent. I run it in my build, maxes everything besides Crysis and ARMA 2 on my 18.5 inch.

Hows the performance for GTA4?
What are the rest of your specs and the monitor resolution?
Hows the performance for GTA4?
GTA 4 is pretty CPU dependant, it would help if we knew the rest of your specs
What are the rest of your specs and the monitor resolution?
AMD Athlon X2 5600+ 2.8Ghz
2GB Ram
1680x1050 (sometimes plugged into my 22" TV)
GTA4 will not be friendly to your CPU and lack of RAM.

So dual core and a clock speed of 2.8ghz isn't enough?
And I forgot to note, I have Windows 7 Home Premium and the ram is DDR2

Not so much. GTA IV is pretty CPU dependant, quadcore really helps to make the game run smoothly.
Save up for a new build.

Okay thanks, back to the subject.
One thing you have to remember, I THINK 8600GT is PCI not PCI-E, correct me if im wrong.
PCI!?
Hell naw, PCI hasn't been used for ages, if anything there was an AGPx8 and a PCI-E version.
get a GeForce 9800GT
So it could be AGP, in which case I think the ATI 3600 series is the highest it goes, don't know about Nvidia
I would save up since you are beating a dead horse. I don't know how many times I have used that phrase in this section.
No it's definately PCI-E, so all cards listed in this thread should be okay right? I'm debating between 9500GT and 9800GT
What memory size would you recommend? 1GB or 512mb ( I obviously know 1GB is better, but I only want an opinion)
And has anyone got any more good ebuyer links for those cards or any alternatives?
What resolution do you play games at?
What resolution do you play games at?
1680x1050
Taking note I currently have to run GTA4 on 800x600 to even play it (even though GTA4 isn't a main factor, I was just wondering whether any of these cards could run it well)
Your processor is a piece of crap get a new one
I like how this faggot OP ignores ATi.

This. Get an AM3/AM2+/AM2 motherboard and reuse your RAM.

8600GT is PCI-E x16, I have one just near me.

I'm not ignoring ATI I've just been an nvidia person all my gaming life, maybe I should change, who knows

Don't get 9800GT, get a 4850 it is around the same price I think. GTS 250 is also good, don't know about prices on the other side of the pond for it though.

And why is nvidia superior? I've used only ATi and AMD my whole life (except for my Macbook), but I know that nvidia is good too. Heck next upgrade I might get a GTS 450 since it performs better than the 4850 series, which I have my eye on for a while.
GTS 450/GTX 460 are worth the money actually than ATI 5000 series graphic cards

I agree, and OP you won't be able to run GTA4 comfortably. You can get any video card you want but your CPU will hold it back.

GTS 250 works out at £80, out of my budget unfortunately (since this wasn't a planned upgrade, it just fell convenient with my 8600GT breaking). 4850 is £70.
£60 at the max please.
THanks
Ok, so 4670 or 9500 GT basically. 9800GT beats the 4670 so get it if you can. With this replacement you could probably play GTA4 at a slightly higher resolution because (stated many times before) CPU is holding you back. But then again, you could just save the new video card when you rebuild.
I vote 9800GT/4670.
