Patents are an amazing thing and society should always hold a patent system, but something is wrong when (as noted in the article) $83bn a year is being used to fight patent trolls alone. Something is seriously wrong when you get businesses such as Righthaven which live off of patent trolling and don't actually provide a good or a service.

But today, the patent registration office has to fund themselves with the patents. Thus making it very expensive to file for a patent. So expensive in fact that only the bigger companies can afford it. The problem with this is also that they will have to accept a lot of the patents too. Like they are forced to accept very vague patents because they need the money. Which means those bigger corporations (like Apple for example) can file or buy very vague patents and then use those to fight their competitors. Which only destroys business and stops great innovations. Plus, it also costs lives because big medicine corporations patents some common medicine which would stop other companies to make cheap copies that can then be sent to places like Africa. What is needed is a complete rework of the entire patent and copyright system. To make it fit with the society we have today. And to prevent bigger companies to use them as a weapon. Plus it needs to get back to being government funded. For example by EU. This is what The Pirate Party believes and works for, and it makes sense.
