His line of work is the type that can be (and often is) outsourced, so he could very well work as a 'external art consultant'

Man, layoffs suck. I hope he finds solid work soon, and he does enough from this campaign to at least not go in the red.
I see no problems with people profiting from something they are skilled at. If it's a good product then people will be happy to pay.
