55 replies, posted
so i have been working on a plot, casting and setting selection for a mini hotline miami movie tribute with other people
recently, i had the chance to get a new camera, which was the main thing stopping me from filming it.
some details
the plot is different, different characters , everything.
the aesthetics, the colors, the music is gonna be very similar, so the spirits there.
we will use airsoft replicas, pistols, rifles, and lots, lots of melee.

So please, any suggestions? anything you want to see on it? anything im missing?
thanks!
That looks pretty cool, man!
Just make sure you get the detached, distant feel of the game when it comes to story. The thing that I loved about HM was that the violence was up close and personal but the characters and everything were a little ambiguous and were at arm's length. It'd be hard to pull that off in a film but that's definitely the feel the game has.
Best of luck!
Relentless, high-velocity violence with a stylish neon backdrop, telling a morbidly dreamlike story. Just like the game. You seem to be going in the right direction, so keep at it!
My knowledge of Hotline Miami is limited, but I guess you should have copious amounts of blood. Perhaps if you could afford it, more blood than the Evil Dead remake.
Blood, blood, more blood. Also, like said above: make it seem dream-like. Just like the game.
Make sure the soundtrack is just as good as the game's soundtrack.
Don't try to make it overly 80's as possible like every other homage out there. Things like Drive and Hotline Miami work because they have a very subtle 80's theme to it, where its not conveyed through the story, but within its surroundings.
As for the story, you should definitely take your own spin on it. The story in hotline Miami isn't very clear and will definitely be tricky when attempting to execute it in film. Definitely have it be the same premise where one half of the story is Jacket recalling the events maybe in an interview/interrogation throughout the first half of the film where it isn't fully revealed who he's talking to? Or maybe someone's asking him questions regarding his actions?
After the credits, have the Fandom team in Hotline Miami 2 be sitting on a couch watching his confessions
As for the action scenes your going to have to make sure your 'Jacket' is pretty agile. Have some fucking gnarly and brutally fast bat swings, reflexes and punches in there. Make him super fucking fast but yet somehow still human in the way he goes about doing things.
Have a night club scene.
Invest in some very nice lighting. If anything I could recommend you watch Only God Forgives, not a great film but the cinematography and the lighting in that film is gorgeous (not saying turn it into a total arthouse film)but a lot of the scenes will give you some excellent influence I'll bet.
That and the violence, have a lot of it. A lot of gore a lot of disguisting shit, some really dark moments (Jacket leaving the places he brings down with total silence and hard breathing)
That and a very good soundtrack. Again don't have insanely over the top new-wave 80's stuff. A lot of the soundtrack in Hotline Miami is a lot more grittier than that. Ever heard of Tobacco? Listen to his songs 'streaker' and 'haircut in the summer' those are the kind of songs that fit 100%
You're also going to want to invest in some fake narcotics. A lot of cocaine and ecstacy (Maybe even design some weird pill) for those gangsters.
Hope this helps! I've been dreaming planning an imaginary Hotline Miami movie in my head for a long time, if you couldn't tell.
Looking neat, but one question: if you live in Chile, how come your Volvo has swedish registry plates?
In one room, in the background, a ripped poster on the wall with just the Facepunch logo on it. As an Easter egg.
About action scenes: make them super fast. I saw a lot of fan made films dedicated to HM. None of them captured the thing that made HM an outstanding game. How long does it take to clear the floor? Two minutes? One minute? 45 seconds? Show us that Jacket wins because he thinks and acts faster than his enemies. His main weapons are blind rage and luck. Don't make long 1v1 fights. Also in such movie action scenes must be very detailed: Jacket may cut off someones ear, or shoot someones fingers off, or miss, or slip on blood. Show us chaotic, fast and brutal action.

The identity of Jacket will play out between two guys, an office guy and the assassin, you wont know which is which until the very end [sp] or are they the same? [/sp]

theres lot of oniric scenes, which will be attached to that feeling

oh yes, there will be blood
Make sure the soundtrack is just as good as the game's soundtrack.
we will make our own soundtrack, heavily based on the original ost itself

thanks! i think we are in the same rail of thoughts. Theres a scene where a guy with his guts out talks to Jacket, so yeah, its very dream-like.

Some blood is fine but since it's not pixelated and stuff it probably shouldn't be overdone. Give us some really kickass and fast paced fight scenes, that's where the true spirit of outline Miami was about.

ill only use red blood when the scene shows it good. ill use dark water for quick scenes.
practical effects or go home
shitty post production blood mist clouds blow. squib that shit up
Idk if you need song recommendations but Delorean Dynamite by Todd Terje, Take Me by Sisyphus, and a lot of stuff by Lazerhawk and TOBACCO are good for this type of vibe.

Also maybe it's just cause I'm obsessed with Joy Division, but New Order has a lot of songs off of the album Movement that give me a very HM/Drive feel. Truth and Senses, both by New Order, definitely give me that feeling.
a little update, here are the masks i bought time ago for Jacket, wore by truly yours

I have also been really invested on the script to make it work and all the plotholes it could have, been asking a lot of people to read it, and i have been studying about mafia structure, home made effects designs and a lot of that stuff.
Production wise its going well, since im studying Film and Arts i already know a chunk of it.
So thats it for know, keep the feedback coming!
This looks so cool.
Well done, this looks like it could turn out very good.
a little teaser of the soundtrack we are making for this shit

hot DAMN this is looking pretty good!
ost is fine. Its shaping up.
This has certainly peaked my interest.
Keep up the good work!
If you need music that sounds kinda like HM, my old album that never garnered any popularity might be of use :v:: https://soundcloud.com/geogzm/sets/smugglers-of-miami
Although it might not be suitable
An important thing I haven't seen mentioned, and most other Hotline Miami fan stuff fails at, is that a key part of every level is the aftermath. Sure you have fast paced action and up tempo music as you slaughter buildings full of people, but also need to slow exit, the realisation of the carnage you wrought without really thinking.
I hope it isn't too late in your production for you to consider this, I just feel like too many Hotline Miami fan productions focus too heavily on the action and ignore the aftermath.
