I prefer an 80s Miami setting.
Probably something like Silent Hill.
Depends on the type of game. I like the medieval period and near future for the most part. Of course near future stuff has been done in the past, considering stuff like Bioshock.
I usually like games set in an urban area and modern or near future/past. Also, apocalyptic settings set almost right after the event that caused it, like L4D, the first level of The Last of Us, or The House of the Dead.
Retro future is awesome, Stubbs the Zombie, Bioshock, Fallout 3, all these kinds of settings are the ones I love most. They're not exactly the type of game I love most, but I always find myself loving the style of architecture (such as the Art Deco in Bioshock) the music (both Bioshock and Fallout 3) and then just the general style of everyday objects in all of the above.
Not-Earth settings, like how Gears of War took place on a made up planet with its own version of history and analogs to real countries
post-apoc
Medieval. Gotta love knights and shit. If chivalry had a singleplayer campaign, it would probably be my favorite game.
Medieval with wizards and shit
None of you said cyberpunk. You should all be ashamed.
1970's NY or LA
sci-fi space stations like system shock 2 or event horizon also liked the setting in i, robot
Generic fantasy or weird-ass fantasy like Morrowind stuff. Love that shit.
Post-Apocalypse like Fallout or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Metro 2033
Cyberpunk
Dark/High Fantasy
high fantasy or bust for me.
I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite, but if I had to pick, I'd say low fantasy.
World War 2 Eastern Front original I know
Dieselpunk. Bioshock and Legend of Korra for example.
Dieselpunk. Also heavily industrialized cities. Like if Rupturefarms was a city and not just a factory.
Borderlands was an awesome setting for me
near and far future
I love exploring so many different settings in video games so it's hard for me to choose, I love them all. I really enjoy modern city or town settings on a sunny Spring day when the grass is bright and green. City settings at night/night when it's raining are pretty cool too. A lot of people make source maps that fit these settings so I usually end up downloading them and playing them for a while. I can't leave without mentioning a couple that are up on my list such as Morrowind for a funky kind of fantasy, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution for one of my favorite cyberpunk settings yet, mainly for it's 2027 setting that looks amazing. I spent a lot of my time just admiring things.
Ancient World/mythology ect... That or 17th-19th centuries.
Tbh I like most settings, only it depends on how well they are done; atmosphere in a game is very important to me. But one setting I particularly like is early modern - urban everything from Victorian to the 50's at the latest. Even better if the artistic direction is surreal, which is why I love the game Contrast despite the animations not being the greatest and the whole game being buggy as fuck. [editline]19th January 2014[/editline] [t]http://stevivor.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/contrast.jpg[/t] Image is a bit blurry, but this is the kind of thing I mean. It's a shame this came out so early on the PS4 that the developers would not have learnt to squeeze out every last drop of power yet. Had the potential to look so much better.
I usually like games set in an urban area and modern or near future/past.
yes, this. I would kill for an rpg that takes place in a contemporary urban setting. barring that I like anything as long as it's done in a way that feels fresh and creative.
Cold war europe.
Soviet Union. Bhutan. Europe. Medieval/Rome/Medieval China/Renaissance. Medieval Fantasy (like Tolkien's stuff and GoT).
Alternate History and Weird War type things with Nazi Occultism.
