Ok I'm a total noob with Linux make sure you understand this before reading the rest of my thread. Anyways I have windows 7 its great and all, but it doesn't seem to fit my need as a programmer. I want to dual boot windows 7 with linux so I can program professionally, aswell as gaming for fun. I heard ubuntu is good, but this is what I'm wanting. A Linux build that suites my needs as a programmer, windows 7 will do the rest for me, oh and a Linux Build that is good with dual booting. [editline]04:29AM[/editline] I rated myself dumb, :P
Any distro should so the job really. Since you're not very familiar with Linux you might want to use one of the user-friendly distros. Ubuntu should do the job, you can also look into Linux Mint and Fedora. They are very easy to use. You also want to look for a distro that stays up to date. Since you're going to be programming you need to stay with the latest libraries and compilers. The one thing with ubuntu is that they stop updating packages for older versions. This is most normal with their system. It will force you to update to the latest versions of ubuntu after the older ones get less support. I think you should look into Ubuntu (and variants), Mint, Fedora, and the other user friendly distros. One more thing, as a programmer you'll find that linux makes it easy on you. Because of the package managers and repositories you can install libraries + headers very easily. You won't need to add the path to your libraries in your project because there's a few folders where all the libraries are installed.
Alright thanks :D, thats seems like all the help I need. I'm going to choose Ubuntu.
you could also look into Debian sid, if you want all up to date then there is the dev branch of Ubuntu (maverick meercat), which is actually pretty nice already.
