I had posted for help before and after some poking around the site I changed my mind alot...
Looking for a bad ass gaming machine
Budget: approx $1500 US give or take a bit
Games/Apps: Windows 7 64bit, FPS, RTS, MMORPG(maybe?)
Location: US (chicago)
Reusing: keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor(samsung syncmaster 912t)
After doing some poking around the site I changed my mind from the core i7-920, saw JohnEdwards posted a link to this article http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3634 and read the whole thing, decided lynnfield what is good for me, but the i7-860 rather than the i5 b/c in the article the guy says the 860 is like the ideal middle ground and it makes sense to me.
CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115214
Motherboard: No fricken clue, I want something that will be stable and reliable but still high performance with some room to expand to SLI/CF when I want to.
Memory: 6GB but no idea how to correlate the best memory for the motherboard/cpu... I know alot of boards will give a memory standard, but I dunno if you can go above that without causing problems??
GPU: Have been hearing I should get the new radeon 5870, true? if so which one? and just for comparison sakes what would be a good nvidia alternative/value, SLI or not?
HDD: Thinking 1TB or 2x 500GB... which would be better? Does a 10,000 RPM make that much of a diff over a 7200? Heh and whats up with the Caviar color scheme with WD, does it mean anything?
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284
Optical drive: No idea whats good or would be smartest to get
PSU: Again no idea, dunno what my needs are??
Case: dunno, i know ill need good airflow and lots of space, maybe the COOLER MASTER ATCS 840??
Please help!! I know I have alot of ?s but I have been outta the loop for quite a while and Ive just been running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to figure this all out myself... Basically I wanna a computer that will rape face but still be stable and reliable with room to upgrade in the future (Add another 5870 or something). Thanks for your help!!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115214 The only real performance gain is the ability to do hyper threading, just for games i5 pretty much the way to go.
Yes, get the 5870, it beats a GTX 295 (well, depends on the game).
HDD: Thinking 1TB or 2x 500GB... which would be better? Does a 10,000 RPM make that much of a diff over a 7200? Heh and whats up with the Caviar color scheme with WD, does it mean anything?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284 Good choice, 1TB is cheaper the 2x500, and there's not as much risk as raid 0
Optical drive: No idea whats good or would be smartest to get
Get whatever's cheap, it doesn't matter so long as it's DVD compatible.
PSU: Again no idea, dunno what my needs are??
600W should be more than enough, go for a quality brand such as OCZ, Antec, Coolermaster, and PC P&C
Case: dunno, i know ill need good airflow and lots of space, maybe the COOLER MASTER ATCS 840??
Looks good, CM make nice cases.

/in quote reply.
Well, as for the motherboard and RAM, you'll need something with a LGA 1156 socket for the i7. (Here is a list, I won't suggest anything because I'm not the best with mobos.)
The 5870 is supposedly a grand card, though still new and fairly expensive. Still, with your budget I don't think it will be a big problem.
Your build will most likely use less than 400w total, so I would suggest getting a 550-650w PSU in preparation for upgrades and whatnot.
As for brands:

I believe that should help.
If you get the 5870,you should get the XFX version. And Caviar black has the highest performance over green and blue.
A good 600 watt will do probly. And for a case a HAF 932 is owned by alot of people on FP and they all seem to love it.
If you get the 5870,you should get the XFX version.
why
why
XFX is a very reliable brand. But Sapphire and HIS version aren't that bad either.I just think XFX is better IMO,never had a issue with them out of about 15 cards.
How on earth did you go through 15 graphics cards?
How on earth did you go through 15 graphics cards?
Friends builds and mine.Then family's.
Ridiculous?Yes very.In fact I probly still have a couple ancient ones around that work.
I've had nothing but problems with XFX, but at least they have a good warranty. imo Sapphire or ASUS is the way to go.
I agree I forgot about ASUS they are good too,but no problems with XFX so far.Except when cards die because of there age.
so when do you plan to build this
[editline]08:16PM[/editline]
the new sale add from newegg comes out tomorrow I believe wait for it

Ahh new sale ad is good, I hope to build in a week or so, gotta wait for next pay check! Thanks for all your help and input, much appreciated
Since sapphire, XFX, and Asus are reliable brands, I'd say go with the asus brand if you want a sexy looking card.
Or you can get a case w/o a window and not care, like me.

Haha ya im more on the not caring how it looks side, I just want it to kick ass and keep working without problems
In truth, all cards are built close enough to reference design that performance would not matter much.
What you want to watch out for is warranty. All companies make lemons. If by chance you get one, you want to know they got you covered.
xfx I believe has a good double lifetime warranty (lol reincarnation)
Watch out for sapphire. Especially since they made a bad batch of vapor x 4890s, I've heard their customer support is terrible.
