Well this aren't toughened up criminals, it's just dudes who spend a lot of time on a PC(meaning they're probably weak as fuck which is not something you want to be in jail), they shit themselves at the thought of jail time because chances are they're gonna be someone's bitch in jail.
They did this because they thought themselves uncatchable but after they started getting arrested they just shat themselves and went into hiding.
"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time" fits.
