I need a laptop for uni and have decided to take the opportunity to replace my geriatric asus that's literally falling apart - since I'm now used to whipping out my [del]cock[/del] phone/tablet when it comes to portable computing I just want something light and very portable with the capabilities of a full fledged x86 laptop. Macbooks, at least in my opinion are the pinnacle of laptop design (they're unburdened with flashy shit and don't fucking creak when you pick them up), but since I'm not willing to rip out my kidney and sell it on the black market I'm content with something that just shamelessly rips off the design and quality. My grant's pretty generous and I'm willing to spend ~£800 but I'd rather spend less if possible.
Anyway, can anyone recommend any ultraportables/ultrabooks/whatfuckingever that have:
13-15" screen
good build quality/tasteful design
decent specs (not too fussed about dedicated graphics since I'm not gonna be gaming much on it and apparently the linux drivers for intel IGPS are way better than ATi/NVIDIA's)
doesn't have to have an OS preinstalled if it takes the price down, I'm prob just gonna wipe it and install linux anyway
Thanks
If you're not pressed for raw power, I'd suggest one of HP's Envy rigs. I have an Envy 6 Sleekbook and though it's not the best performer in the world, it's small, easy to use, and absolutely stunning to look at. Build quality is great, and the whole thing feels solid. The design is perfect, and there is no shortage of connectivity on either side. You obviously don't get a disk drive since it's so small, but nowadays you almost don't need one.
The screen is my only gripe about the laptop; it has a very low viewing angle and colors don't always pop like I'd expect them to. The rather low 720p-range resolution makes things a tad ramped at times, but for something as portable as it is I don't expect to do much heavy multitasking anyways. The backlight is more than bright enough for use in broad daylight, and battery life has been consistently 5 hours of moderate use on a single charge.
The laptop feels snappy and quick, and I've got the AMD A6 version, so I'd imagine that the i3 or i5 variants would be even faster. Graphically, it won't run Crysis, but it can handle anything you'll find on the web and some more basic 3D applications. I've not tried it, but I'd imagine it'd fair well in less intensive CAD software if you really wanted to do that on a laptop.
Now that's the ultrabook, but the ENVY line has a few other laptops that might pique your interest. I'm not sure on pricing, but I know that a lot of them are styled very similarily to Apple's MacBooks, and they're pulled off very well. Just something I think would be worthwhile to look into. Good luck finding something you like.
ASUS UX32VD is what I'm rocking, got a GT620M. Is pretty damn awesome for all uses, weighs 1.45 kgs, and is actually capable of decent gaming. Got an IPS display, too.
And yes it will run Crysis.
I think samsung has AMD based ultra books for a low price.
Sager Np6110 from Xoticpc.com
$800 for 650m in a 11/12 inch netbook.
