I'm not quite sure what to think of this. He's right, fundamentally, but there are definitely some examples of people who understand good design without being a skilled programmer or artist.
Richard Garriott may have made some good games but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to gloat like that, especially while being so incredibly condescending at the same time.

There's a point in what he's saying though. How many times have we laughed at "ideas guys" threads?
"Yeah I'm the best designer" and his game looks like daoc :downs:
I just looked at his wiki page and I've only briefly played one of the games he made
What a prick
There's a point in what he's saying though. How many times have we laughed at "ideas guys" threads?
Most of which are quickly whipped up first drafts and thus almost by definition poorly designed so yeah, laughing at those is almost par for the course.
Plus, practically everybody who starts an 'idea' thread doesn't have the slightest idea on how to lay out a design document.

Maybe I should say that I don't defend his statement about him being the best. He's outranked by Chris Roberts, Gilbert, Schafer, Avellone and all those goodfellas.
[sp]and me. I'm the best[/sp]
"I want you to bow down and kiss my shoes! Wait, where are you going?" - Richard Garriott
Kinda sounds like that. But after reading the article, i can understand where he's coming from, he just could have said it a little better.
The same man that paid out of his own pocket $30 million to go to space, then asks for a $1 million to make a game which he can clearly afford to privately fund.
who
Awful choice of title for the article but he makes a good point.
Iunno, the guys at wolfire are pretty fucking amazing at game design.
Iunno, the guys at wolfire are pretty fucking amazing at game design.
Also Valve.
Just watch any of their dev commentaries. It's amazing how many thought they put into things that many devs would have just completely overlooked.
Iunno, the guys at wolfire are pretty fucking amazing at game design.
Maybe he hasn't met them.. :v:
He's not gloating or saying he's better than anyone else, stop interpreting it like that. He's saying that the industry sucks and nobody designs a good game anymore, which I think I'd have to agree with. What happen to the days of Zelda and such? Nobody really puts heart into it anymore except a few like Valve.

Only recent shift is the less inventive more safely designed games are getting more spotlight.
Look.
Ultima is cool, I got 4, Savage Empire, and Martian Dreams free on GOG, but don't be full of yourself man.
Good to see some things never change.
Remember everyone, this guy literally wanted everyone to call him "Lord British" in normal conversation for the longest time, and inserted himself into the Ultima series as an unkillable king (you could only kill him in Ultima VII, afaik, and only through an incredibly convoluted process). this is par for the course for him. At least he has made some pretty good games.
I don't think you read the article mate.

Or you.
What he says isn't exactly new, but I think it's something most people don't give a lot of thought to. Got what a shitty title.
Yeah man, "Tabula Rasa" went so well, lasted a whooping 2 years.
Game designer of the decade!!

Guy has a good point, title is shitty.
Sensationalist headline if I ever saw one
Where did I say it was a bad game?
I was implying that if you call yourself the "best game designer ever", you would expect his games to last for atleast longer than 2 years. Not really "successful" money-wise.
Except he didn't call himself "best game designer ever".

Ultima actually had quite a few players (by that I mean in the hundreds if not thousands) just a couple of years ago.
Tabula Rasa was unpublished what do you expect lol

10+ years is pretty long. I dunno how many still play to this day, but you have to give it the credit it deserves and not make ignorant assumptions without at least taking 30 seconds to research the last paragraph of the summary on the wikipedia page

Maybe if you actually read the article you would know he never called himself the "best game designer ever" or anything close to that.
That sounds arrogant if you take it as him thinking he's better than everyone else. But he kinda explains it right there, just those that end up with the job tend to be less fit for it than those who do other parts of the game. He's kinda rather got a point.
“I’ve met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I’m not saying that because I think I’m so brilliant. What I’m saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there’s a reason why.”
I think I miss the point in what he said.

I don't mind that there's people in the industry who mainly focuses on the complete design of the game, if that usually incorporates being good at writing and having more-than-beginner skills in programming and general design. That way designers wont just go "but hey put this in!" without knowing the limitations and eventual consequences.

Do you not know about the whole BS situation of ncsoft firing him, saying he stepped down, an then about half a year to a year later they shut the servers down..
Edit:
It's the very reason why I hate ncsoft with a passion
