I have been wanting to screen record black ops or any other call of duty game. I was wondering if you can screen record with camtasia studio 7. I have been trying to mess around with the settings but cant figure it out. If there is anything better that might be free please tell me. Thanks
faps
I've heard Camstudio is a good free alternative.
Fraps.
Camstudio for desktop screening and FRAPS for games.
I heard that Techsmith's free alternative to Camstasia Studio, Jing, is pretty good.
Oh sorry, I thought you wanted to do screen recording for like your desktop.
Fraps is THE best for game recording. Worth the money in my mind. An alternative might be MSI Afterburner, I know it does video recording.
Dxtory is far better than Fraps or any similar program, well worth the money.
Uses virtually no CPU at all - can just about encode to h264 on the fly if you want, and also outputs to directshow for livestream and similar purposes. One major use I put it to is displaying a game on a TV while playing it on a monitor using the directshow output feature - amazingly the only lag incurred is vsync, and the quality is 1:1.
If you're giving it a try, Lagarith is considerably better than the internal codec for lossless recording.
Interesting, never heard of dxtory. But I'll try it tonight. $45 dollars is quite pricey right now, but I'll check it out.

Oh, wow I'm looking at the features. It's incredible. The features I see on it would make my recordings so much more convenient.
Thank you for posting that, sir.
An alternative to Fraps that is free but not as good is WeGame. It requires you to make an account, though.

Theres pretty much nothing better than fraps. It's not fantastic but it's pretty much the best there is
Xfire's in-built video recording does the job, and has all the same settings as Fraps. It does cause a little more lag though, and the video file sizes are rather huge even at half-size.

Thanks, does the bought version of fraps take up a lot of memory like the trial one?

Fraps uses the same codec it always has. That doesn't change, nor should anyone expect it too. It's capturing lossless, low compression RGB24 video, so it's going to be large. You have to trade something.
Performance
FileSize
Quality
Normally you choose two. Fraps went for performance and quality. DXtory has the ability to choose, which I like.
