Up to you.
Bowie.
Kanye
Linkin Park
just realised they were both actors  so many parallels yet totally different.

Apples and oranges (and a sad little raisin).
Bowie's music really helped me live a little bit longer when I was dealing with depression I've never listened to Prince So Bowie wins by default

Bowie by far. Prince was also unique but Bowie just took it to the next level with his different characters and just crazy personality.
Bowie. Prince looked like he was pretty obnoxious as a person.
Bowie
Bowie... ignore the poll, I didn't look and accidentally voted Prince... Both legends tho.
I thought David Bowie's music was way overrated. I prefer covers of his music to the original songs: I haven't heard any of prince except for "Kiss" so idk.
Prince looked like he was pretty obnoxious as a person.
why? they were both p flamboyant in their prime.
both are legends
If I were voting on whose songs I like better, I'd go Bowie by quite a bit. However if I were voting on who was the more talented musician I'd have to pick Prince. by quite a bit. I can't pick.
Treating art as a competition will always be disgusting as well as a complete misunderstanding and under appreciation of art
Treating art as a competition will always be disgusting as well as a complete misunderstanding and under appreciation of art
a facepunch poll isn't rly a competition
It doesn't change the fact that it's daft. How do you judge if one artist is "better" than the other? I listen to Prince and Bowie for two completely different reasons and with two separate mindsets.
How do you judge if one artist is "better" than the other?
subjectively speaking in this particular case, bowie always had a spiritual and darker edge for me, where as prince was more a kind of "liberation/celebratory" type of artist. on a pure technical level, prince was single-handedly a music machine. But I was always more familiar with what Bowie had to say. I did manage to see Prince before he past away and it was a life-affirming experience.. this being said, I'm still very much in the dark regarding both artists even though I've listened to their music a lot over the years... Prince for funk is like what Miles Davis was for Jazz; he stretched and bended it all over the place for hours on end.
Correct. And that's why to suggest one is better than the other just doesn't work. I love Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead, but I can't say that one is better than the other even when I like listening to what singers have to say. I can't compare their lyrics. I can't compare their styles. I can contrast them, but their contrasts aren't "better" or "worse". When I try to listen to music, I try to listen on a blank slate without comparisons. That extends past music into the realm of artwork altogether - I don't like alluding to any kind of standard. I feel strongly about it as a musician. I feel like all artists have some impact on me and measuring their impact as "better" or "worse" misses the point. I've heard advice all my life, and there are some types of advice that carry different weights but ultimately mean a lot to me. I've had many people in my life, and I don't think that one is particularly better than the other, save for when they commit atrocities. "Better" is a word that I don't really like in most situations, save for discussions of objectivity.
If you want to talk about how to judge art, I think it works on a personal level, if it affects you more it will mean more to you as a person. Then again if you're a technical person you'll go into all these complex details that I don't care about. At the end of the day, it's up to you who you vote for.

Why argue over semantics, it's not what they stood for anyways. Then again I've never been one for picking favorites. I'll bitch and moan about chocolate vs vanilla ice cream ffs. :v: Variety is the sum of what made these two great after all.

Hands down, Bowie. When you deconstruct his music you further appreciate the complexity that went into creating it.
i think if you put this poll on a majority black forum you'd see a lot more prince votes
i think if you put this poll on a majority black forum you'd see a lot more prince votes
Why does this matter?
