For them it would be like losing a penny to buy the domain.

stunning, amazing use of the website
What a pathetic way to get money
Lol what, that playstation4 domain was apparently registered on 20 december 1998
I don't understand why companies can't simply have one site. Why not just have a Nintendo.com, xbox.com, and playstation.com ?

Well, if they didn't own the domains, someone could possibly scam users using the wiiu.com/playstation4.com/whatever domain, making people believe it is official.

Talk about foresight.

Generally they just have them redirect to their main site anyway.

Don't they use these sites to just redirect people to the official one?

Sony does this.
In the UK we have http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/ and http://uk.playstation.com/ps4/ for the ps3/ps4 (and a similar one for the vita). playstation3.com redirects to site home page

In this case, the domain was already registered even before the normal Wii was announced. I think back in 2003 or 2004.
