I don't remember exactly but was it the PS3 that allowed you to play multiplayer with no cost? Because now it seems that you must pay to play multiplayer on the PS4

It sucks definitely, but it's still more generous than Xbox Live in which you have to pay on top to use any of your subscription-based offerings like Netflix. It's not too bad on either side because you get free games with the subscriptions, although I don't think Microsoft is giving away free games any more on the Xbox One, but is still resuming the free games offering on the 360 until it's inevitable discontinuation.

I think it's ridiculous how celebrated the PS4 was for being not terrible. It really says something about the current state of games when everyone gets excited for whichever console is the least awful.

The PS4 is receiving a lot of legitimate praise. The amount of hate that the Xbox One is receiving may just make it seem that PS4 is simply liked for being "not awful."

That's seems more like a proper service than LIVE ever has been.
I'm not comfortable with this whole subscription service.

I'm not saying the console itself is bad, mind you. I'm just saying that things like the crowd cheering at the conference where they revealed that you could play used games on it (a 'feature' that should really be a given) are pretty depressing. My main issue is with PS+, though. That doesn't negate the fact that prior to this, online multiplayer on PlayStation was free. PlayStation Plus is a cool service; I'm not saying it's shit or that it's overpriced. But we enjoyed a whole generation on PS3 with free online multiplayer. Why are they taking it away now? I don't care about the other PS+ features. I just wanna play online games. I have to pay for so many subscription services as it is and this just piles another five bucks on top of my monthly bills. It's "not as much as XBL", but it's still more than free.

I remember reading this somewhere, but I forgot and it looks like it isn't mentioned any more.

I still don't get why you need Gold on Xbox to watch, say, netflix, was this ever explained?

They make a ton off of XBL just from the hordes of Halo/CoD/Minecraft players, and yet the dashboard is still plastered with ads even if you're a paying user. Why? Because they can.
I wonder why Sony went the paid subscription route. Steam doesn't ask for money to play my games online, why do we have to on the PS4? I'm not making a master race stance, I'm just saying Sony would probably make even more money if they kept online play free, at least at launch. PS4 seems to be the more popular new console at the moment, but how many more people would they have turned on to the PS4 if Sony said, "and you don't have to pay for Live."

Its probably to fund anti-cheating measures.
They really want to improve their network too, I already get good speeds from them but this means better servers/security/service. The improvement will be noticeable a few years after the PS4's release.

Mmm... Ps4's single player games better be on point then. LOL because if I gotta pay I'm gonna have to pay to play online then forget it.
