Can anyone who's played this say how it is? I know it's not great, but is it a cheesy but fun co-op shooter or is it just dreadful on all accounts?
Cheesy is the right word, I got the feeling that the devs gave up taking the plot seriously halfway through. And despite the title, don't expect any fear. Still, it's pretty good fun, especially with a friend. Definitely not dreadful.
Its pretty fun, I guess acceptable for that price. Also, the AI is pretty interesting.
Should've bought it when it was $6 on GMG a few weeks ago. Edit: Actually, it's still only $15 on GMG and it redeems on Steam so you really shouldn't even buy it from Steam.
Really great with a friend. Although short and quite boring in singleplayer, I'd say it's worth the money. [editline]26th January 2012[/editline] Fucking run is fantastic as well, and extremely hectic.
Can anyone who's played this say how it is? I know it's not great, but is it a cheesy but fun co-op shooter or is it just dreadful on all accounts?
it's all about the co-op, and if you're not playing co-op then you're just missing out on fun. bad design choice imo but it throws out all of the scares and atmosphere that the other F.E.A.R. games had. it is also heavily, HEAVILY consolized, and you'll be able to tell in the controls and general gameplay. it feels more like a creepy call of duty than a F.E.A.R. game. if you're a fan of FEAR and you want to be disappointed, buy it. if you've got nothing to lose and you want co-op fun, i guess buy it? as a nerd i am also into the FEAR lore... and this game rubbed me the wrong way when it came to characters and organizations, etc. I'll spoil tag my concerns. [sp]ATC Special Op forces are now super tech, into the extreme. They literally use portal technology to warp through objects and appear elsewhere. They also have giant mechs that fall from the sky. If you've played FEAR2 you know that this is specifically a Replica thing, not an ATC thing. And you can miss even realizing there are Replica in this game, mostly because they fight alongside ATC, with absolutely no explanation as to why or how ATC got Replica forces under their control. Then there are just roaring monsters everywhere at one point and end up being scary only because you're afraid of DYING and LOSING, because their shock/scare factor wears off almost immediately after the first area you find them in. but thats not a lore thing thats just a gameplay thing so whatever. i was disappointed and i thought it was extremely weak. i do however enjoy watching fettel in cutscenes. thats it though. [/sp]
Co op is always fun, no matter how shitty the game :v:

To be perfectly honest, this was one of my favorite shooters last year. The storyline is horrendously cheesy and obviously it's not scary at all, but it was a ton of fun. The scoring system encourages variation in playstyle and the two playable characters are actually very distinct. Only real complaint is that, assuming you play through with both characters, it really won't take much longer than, say, 10 hours. I bought it for $40 some time last year. The length made it not really worth that much, great as it was, but $20 is more reasonable. [editline]26th January 2012[/editline] Oh, and the multiplayer is largely dead. Which is extremely unfortunate since it has some of the best multiplayer modes in recent memory.
This game was great. It's like they realized that the FEAR games were never really scary, and turned it into a really solid arcade shooter. It's a shooter done right. Everything feels really solid like the combat was in the first game. I highly recommend it.

Got this for £4 a few weeks back on GreenmanGaming.

But I don't think those were ATC soldiers at the beginning beating up Pointman.[/sp]
[sp]ATC color is primarily blue, which was the "color" of everything associated with the soldiers in FEAR 3 as well. if they are not ATC, they did not make that very clear. it would make less sense for Replicas to be under their control as well. the portaling supersoldiers (or "phase casters"?) are also clearly the superiors giving the orders. if they are mercenaries, there are cues they should have taken from Perseus Mandate such as giving them different weapons, different colors, perhaps not associated them with ATC in a very obvious way, etc[/sp]
