Pretty simple--when will our forum die, when will people forget about it, when will it be totally inactive with posts only as frequent as every few weeks or so?
Since it is technically the official forum for Garry's Mod, it'll only die after the game starts to die down a bit. Also, the original, main players of Garry's Mod (and this generation of video games) are growing up and will have less and less time for games or forums. New games will come out and Garry's Mod will become forgotten, while forums are developed for the new popular games, making those forums popular just as Facepunch is.
So, when taking that into consideration...my guess is that Facepunch will last another 8 years.

Years. I think Facepunch can keep evolving and keeping up with its userbase since it's not specifically a game-oriented forum, which die much more easily.

Our userbase has diversified well beyond those who came here for Gmod, so it'll certainly live long beyond that. I'm not sure it'll ever die simply because people stop visiting it, as many people (like myself) come here so often simply because it's familiar and old habit. Rather, it'll probably die whenever Garry gets bored of it.
When Rust is publicly available
It won't die I will stay and be the last poster.
Probably depends on how well Rust does and whether Garry feels like maintaining it a few years down the line (he has a kid on the way, doesn't he?). Doesn't seem the type to hand over the reigns either, so whenever he gets tired of/forgets about it.
Ideally it'll exist until the server is burnt off the face of the planet by the expanding sun.
Must be about 4-5 years since I last played Gmod longer then 5 minutes. And yet I'm still here. I'm quite positive that it'll stay for a long time since Gmod isn't as important on this forum anymore as it used to be.
Well, asfaik is Gmod doing better and better.
I mean the games is old - 3 million copies has been bought.
But here's the amazing thing, that last million only took 7 months.
I don't understand it, but Garry's mod seems to be one of the only games that sells MORE copies a day, the older it gets.
I would love to see some more stats, it's been a while since last graph from Garry :-)

I have several scenarios which can be compared to the theories of the universe ending.
[b]the big rip[/b]:there's going to be a thing that rips facepunch apart, but it isn't dark matter as the original theory suggests. It's most likely going to be Garry or one of the mods pulling something, think hezzy X10. There's going to be some widespread chaos for a while, then the fourm will die out as more and more people leave.
[b]the cold dark[/b]:our forums will stay open far into the future, but as most communities do: facepunch will die a slow death. Posters will leave one by one, mods will also start dropping the job. Eventually Garry himself will resign, leaving our fourm in a state of lawlessness that so often kills old forums. People will post shit that would usually get them banned (cp, warez, ect.) eventually those people will leave too, leaving only the most dedicated of posters left. Probably just hanging around in the lmao pics thread, still talking as though there's still the hustle and bustle of the forums around them. Eventually, they will get bored and move on as well. Leaving our forums as another fossil on the Internet. Only to be rediscovered every once and a while by the occasional new Garry's mod player, even years after the final update. They will gaze upon the stagnant posts, a window to another time; frozen.
[b]external intervention[/b]: this isn't an actual universe ending theory, but I thought I might as well add it. Sometime down the line our forum will be targeted by some other website or even a world government. In the case of the rival forum, they'll probably flame us for a long time until we just up and give up. Think the rust cat spam in lmao pics, just dragged out over several months or even years. Or in the case of a government intervention, they'd probably shut us down for some cp or warez being passed around in some custom fourm, or through private messages. One final form of intervention could be a natural disaster or terrorist attack taking out the servers for our forums, and Garry not caring enough or not having enough money to replace them.
These are some of the ways I imagine this forum going under, I just hope I'll be there for the death throes. To witness the death of a minor behemoth would be glorious but sad. I just hope we'll all find another place where we can continue the facepunch experience. A (usually) refined place where people don't troll or flame (too much) and we can all enjoy our one big facepunch family.
