So I'm one of the few who just doesn't have a phone. But it's about time I got one.
So you can imagine how I know almost nothing about phones/ smartphones / whatever.
So I'm ready to spend up to about 1000-1300 dollars for a phone. ( phones cost fucking ridiculously much here in iceland ).
I've been looking at the iPhone 4 but I don't want to be completely ignorant and I want to check out some other phones.
My brother has an HTC Desire ( i think it was called ) And it's pretty good but it has some problems.
What I want from a phone is:
Good audio quality ( I love listening to music )
Nice display + video playback. ( I'd love to watch some episodes or something whilst on a break at work ).
Browser that has good flash support ( HTC desire had flash support but it was pretty sloppy, I don't know how well phones support flash these days. Like I said, I'm not very familiar with smart phones. )
+ in general, a good quality phone.
Is the iPhone the good choice or does facepunch know of anything better ?
Samsung Galaxy S II
If you can get it
Droid/Driod 2
HTC Sensation, Evo 3D, and Samsung Galaxy S II are some of the top phones either out or coming out soon.
Best cheapest phone is Blackberry Curve

- 12mp camera - 3x zoom, 720p recording @ 16:9
- 15GB internal memory standard
- Superlong battery life, easily lasts a week

Most people I see stating that has never tried out Symbian for maybe more than a minute, and sorry if I'm making a wrong assumption when I say that you're in that group. The thing most people ramble about is how it's not smooth and asswiping, and while that is kinda true once in a while, I don't see it much when I use it. with the new update coming, I think we can rule out the UI argument. I've seen Symban^3 crash, yes, but I've seen Android and iOS crash, too, and no OS is perfect. It has "true" multitasking, too, and that's really a great point in my book. The browser is crap, but a new one is coming with the update, and you can download opera aswell.
This is of course only my personal experience and opinion, and your may differ, but I'm simply tired of many people just dumping shit out their mouths when they talk about Symbian. If you really have used one, I can just say that my experience with it must have brought much more satisfaction than the one of yours.
On the matter of Samsung Galaxy S II, it looks like a great phone, and the camera shouldn't be bad either, as it is with many phones.

The N8 only seems worth it if you really want the best camera you can get in a phone. Most other high end phones have much more capable hardware with bigger, higher resolution screens.
The iPhone's great if you love simplicity. I personally have one and find it great with my busy lifestyle, plus it docks with my car head unit easily.
Plenty of comparable Android based phones exist though, it's all personal preference these days really - hardware is much for muchness when dealing with an average user.
Android fanboys incoming \/

Right off the bat, if you want Flash Support, the iPhone is a no go.
As for sloppy flash performance, do remember that Flash isn't exactly lightweight and smartphones are currently nowhere near as powerful as PC's. So unless I'm mistaken, which I may well be, no smartphone is going to have smooth Flash (Unless the flash animation itself is optimised for mobile).
You also said you wanted "good audio quality", do you mean through the loudspeaker or through the headphones?

Actually the N8 has a pretty mediocre browser, but it's getting an update soon that will replace it with one that's 10x faster and way better. Or actually, I can't remember if it already got it or not.
edit: and the standard memory is 16gb
If you're looking to watch things on your phone get one with a big screen (4.3), people telling you to get the Galaxy S2 are assuming you need a dual core phone which from what you seem to want to use it for, I wouldn't suggest.
Go with the Desire HD, thunderbolt etc in my opinion, a friend of mine has the N8 and I wasn't impressed by much, screen was a little too small for me, camera was pretty amazing though.

The update isn't out yet, but I think it'll be in a week or something.

The only bad thing about it is the fact that it's ugly and in some cases it's sluggish. It still has more features than most phones in terms of being closer to proper web browsing.
ZTE-Blade?
With a budget of 1000-1300$, eh, no.
And he wants Flash.
Which I still don't have working on mine.

I wouldn't call it ugly, not even close, but that's design for you, totally subjective.

Actually with this kind of budget, he could get a good phone, and a playbook, as it plays Flash extremely well, and has got Android apps, too. Just a thought.
The N8 is actually pretty decent for what it proposes. Most Symbian-hating people don't even know how it feels.
I have a Symbian myself, and so far I haven't been unable to do anything I wanted to.
Nonetheless, there's one single reason I'm getting an Android next: emulation. Android has some rad entertainment apps, and that's where Symbian drops the ball.
You could've gotten an N900. It has pretty much every emulator there is :v:
Or if MeeGo will have good emulator support (which I think it will), you can wait for the N950

Oh, yeah. The browser UI is pretty bad.
HTC Desire HD
Yes, HD, the new one. Not just HTC Desire. HTC Desire HD. It's an amazing phone.
