We've sent the pos back to Dell many times through the past year or so, every time it's hinges rebreak (googled the model, this is a common issue ) and it overheats everyday. It's been nothing but trouble. The apps she uses is MSN Messenger (is there some sort of alternative to this?), Skype, Open Office, and Chrome (Facebook, youtube, photobucket). So her PC performance needs aren't huge necessarily. What should she get? I also saw an ad for a free xbox if you get select Windows 7 PC's, are those any good?
Windows 7 PC's are good. And I suggest you get one of those if you're willing to pay around 600 dollars for a PC. Although if you have some understanding of basic computer building I highly suggest you build her a new Desktop, which with the Hardware alone would come up to 200 dollars. Afterwards you have to buy the OS, monitor, and other optical devices. So it's up to you, but. Hey, if you don't have an Xbox. By all means, get one of those Microsoft computers. Best of luck
Desktop is not an option, remember, she is an average user, they think desktops have no purpose.
Does your sister need a huge storage capacity on the HDD for her files? [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Just take a little ASUS or Acer netbook. That's will be enough
Find a cheap netbook with a 12"-13" screen, one of those AMD chipsets and a good battery life. She doesn't really need a full Core i5 with a lap-roasting graphics card.
The xbox deal is for any HP laptop with an intel processor, that costs at least 600$.
The xbox deal is for any HP laptop with an intel processor, that costs at least 600$.
It's been proven to be a ripoff from the second the deal aired, afaik. All they do is add the price of the xbox to the original price of the laptop and say it comes with a "free" xbox.
Use an Asus netbook. I'd say this one from a quick glance at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220816

Thanks for the responses guys, and thanks for informing me of the xbox ripoff. I'll ask if she's ok with a netbook, and yeah storage isn't an issue, the only issue is durability.
Pepper;31259446']Then you may want to look at some thinkpad T42s.
agreed, thinkpads are durable as fuck
Ok how about this, forget the durability thing (not that I'm asking for it to be not endurable :v:), but what's a good budget laptop, maybe $500, well maybe a bit higher, if you can justify the cost to me, it's ok if it's nearly $700.
To me, it sounds a lot like she just needs a laptop, not anything specific. Just something to run Windows and some IM programs, Firefox + Flash, etc. I'd go with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157680 Fun fact: I have gone with that, actually. I have one right next to me. Brilliant little piece of work. Only thing that bugs me is the 3-hour battery life.
She could get a tablet. That would be perfect for her.
She could get a tablet. That would be perfect for her.
Would that run MSN?

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7281723&CatId=4965 Thinkpad she will have a hard time killing that thing. Or this one if you want something not refurbished since it sounds like she might want a long warranty.

So HP's break really easy? [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Battery life is actually not an issue.
They don't just break very easily, they'll break themselves.
So is that refurb the best choice then? I think 4GB should be the minimum for any modern PC with windows 7 anyways.

Way better than the other pos machines some have suggested. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] And lol why is the Newegg one so much more?

If you want a peace of mind, I would suggest investing a bit and going for this. * Sandy bridge i5 with integrated graphics * adequate memory (4GB) and storage (320gb) * high quality lcd panel and great resolution (1600x900) * thinkpad chassis In short, very good specs, excellent battery life and excellent build quality. Newegg lists it under 870 dollars, but if I remember comrrectly, Lenovo offers great deals for students and IBM shareholders.
