• PC hard freezes while doing something resource demanding

So I have been annoyed by this for quite some time, this first started happening with the PC I built recently. After playing a game for 5 minutes it freezes up, then it for some reason randomly stopped doing that and recently it has begun yet again. So first of all my GPU is GTX 560TI and my PSU is 550w (http://www.chieftec.de/en/psus/a-85-series/ctb-550s.html) (And no I am not overclocking anything) I know for certain that it is not temperature based, since I had my system temperatures open while I was playing grey windowed. At first I had resolution at 1280x720 and AA off and I was able to play it for 10 minutes without crashing. Cranked the settings to 4xAA and 1600x900 and after few minutes it froze. It pretty much does that with all the games that I play, other than ones what aren't resource demanding (binding of isaac, hard time) and even when I am in UDK. If I leave the computer open for a long time ( a day or something ) it hard freezes by itself.
What temperatures did you get and what ptograms did you use? Also what PSU do you have?
What temperatures did you get and what ptograms did you use? Also what PSU do you have?
Read the OP a bit better, I gave a link. And the temperatures were in 50s , used speedfan.
Could you give a list of all of the specs? Also, what else is on the power strip used by your computer? Finally, are there any other devices connected to the same outlet as the power strip for your PC?

And yeah my PC is the only one in the power strip.
That's a tough one. Do you have any power-saving utilities installed? In the Bios, do you have any quiet fan settings on? Just for fun, you should ensure that your CPU heat sink is securely mounted to your motherboard and reseat the RAM. It won't hurt, but I'm not entirely sure that it will help.

And no, I don't have quiet fan settings enabled and I do not have any power saving utilities.
Sorry that it has taken a week, I recently opened my PC again and reseated the RAM and also removed the other harddrive I had because I thought it was malfunctioning. Seems like the problem is still there, I haven't tested out on any games yet but my computer happened to hard freeze like 15 minutes after I opened it up.
Bump, the issue has returned. I fixed the problem when I was using windows 7, I was able to play stuff just fine. Now I upgraded to Win 8 and now i'm getting the same problem again I fixed the problem by removing the faulty hard drive I had installed, and then everything worked fine. Now after installing windows 8 and playing some ass creed brotherhood, after 5 mins the game crashes.
Run Memtest86, see if you get errors. Bad RAM causes all programs to behave weird.

Do you have any overclocks? Reset the bios to default values.
Do you have any overclocks? Reset the bios to default values.
Nope, I never overclocked anything.
Update the BIOS
Update the BIOS
Tried that, was shitting bricks because apparently it could fuck up your system etc still freezing.
Video drivers? Had somewhat similar issues with corrupting video drivers.
Video drivers? Had somewhat similar issues with corrupting video drivers.
Removed my existing GPU drivers and redownloaded the most recent one and installed it. No success.
That's a junk PSU, a bad quality power supply can put out terrible power which can cause crashes. Replace that PSU with a better one (different brand) and see what happens.
That's a junk PSU, a bad quality power supply can put out terrible power which can cause crashes. Replace that PSU with a better one (different brand) and see what happens.
Well, which brand makes good PSU's ?
Seasonic, Enermax, Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling. Those are the main brands. Before you get one scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware and Superantispyware, if you have not done so.

So I bought a 650W Corsair PSU and it still freezes up. 70 euros well spent :v:
So I bought a 650W Corsair PSU and it still freezes up. 70 euros well spent :v:
Still well spent regardless. On the side of things I'm not exactly sure what could be the issue. Do the process of elimination. Unplug all devices connected to your PC except your mouse and keyboard. Does the problem still occur? If yes then remove all but the basic essential hardware components inside your PC and see if the problem still occurs. It would help for us to know your full computer specs in full detail.
Still well spent regardless. You did your PC a massive favor just by ditching that PSU. On the side of things I'm not exactly sure what could be the issue. I am considering doing a repair install tommorow.
It's still good that you got a better power supply. The first thing you spend money on when building a PC is the power supply, as it's the most critical component. Flames have been had from cheap ones. Check to make sure the latest motherboard drivers are installed. Also, load up a Linux live CD and see if the pc freezes when running that, if so then it's likely a hardware issue.
I decided to reset my BIOS settings to optimized defaults and opened up my case to see if anything would happen inside once the game freezes. Ended up playing for like 25 minutes, no crashes. Dunno what I did but it seems like the problem is gone, havent got much more time to test though so ill play some more once I have time. Also freaked out thinking that my CPU or smth was overheating due to a weird smell coming from my case, but thats the new PSU :v: edit: nope, still didn't work. Ended up refreshing windows 8 maybe there were some corrupt files in the install or something o.o
Also the computer freezes now even when I am not doing anything resource demanding. If I am unlucky I have to reboot like 3-4 times just to use the computer.
Did you reinstall Windows and all appropriate drivers? It sounds like a hardware failure, perhaps your motherboard or processor is faulty. RMA the motherboard.
That's a junk PSU, a bad quality power supply can put out terrible power which can cause crashes. Replace that PSU with a better one (different brand) and see what happens.
The specific model of PSU he has is "average". It's not an IED and won't explode when put under a load. It also doesn't have terrible ripple characteristics on the rails while under a load. The only bad thing I can say about that specific model is that it uses Teapo capacitors, which are known to be shit and have short lifespans. I have a nickname for them : Cheapo Teapo. Depending on how old his PSU is, it could be the caps have gone bad.

I am considering going back to windows 7 considering how I managed to fix that problem on win7 and it came back when I installed win8
