• Macbook/Macbook Pro, opinions?

I've been thinking of getting a laptop for a while, and the Macbook seems like a good choice. If I were to get a laptop my main uses for it would be 1) internet browsing 2) light gaming (nothing more strenuous than TF2, although that may be a bit much for a laptop) 3) watching videos If I were to get a macbook it would either be the regular one or the cheapest macbook pro, because I don't want to spend a fortune on it. I'm prepared to use bootcamp to play games if I have to, but wouldn't want everything to have to be done on windows, then there wouldn't be much of a point of getting a mac in the first place. So what do you guys think of the macbook? Please no trolling, if you want to say it's bad use reasoning. By the way I don't own a mac or anything so I don't have any experiences with it, the only apple thing I have is an Iphone.
if you want a laptop just for those uses you're better off just buying a PC. yes Macs are nice and can to those things but the price isn't right, I would get the MacBook if it's your only choice like when I got mine. but I don't regret getting my MacBook at all. I love it!
I say wait for the iPad.
no, the iPad isn't even comparable to the MacBooks.
My MacBook I find to be much quicker at surfing the internet than my Windows rig. As for games, Windows would make better use of the integrated graphics. You could use CrossOver, but Boot Camp would definitely get you a better FPS. I got mine for under £1k using the student pricing. MacBook, with RAM upgraded to 4GB and the Harddrive upgraded to 500GB, along with iWork. The cheapest MacBook Pro and the default MacBook have absolutely no differences in the specs, so I'd go with the MB and at upgrade the RAM. Regardless of which one you pick, I'm sure you'll love the trackpad.
Hang on, everyone seems to think they're going to bump them if i5s and i7s soon.
I have the cheapest Macbook Pro, it's fucking awesome for designing websites and stuff on too. I've got a 19" monitor to dual screen it when doing heavy photoshop, though because 13.3" doesn't cut it. If you're planning on playing Source games, Crossover Games works reasonably well, but crashes a lot for me, I've given up pretty much and just started using the PS2 for gaming and Mac for designing.
Hang on, everyone seems to think they're going to bump them if i5s and i7s soon.
I heard i3's and i5's but i7's would be cool. any idea when the next update is? hopefully not June. [editline]10:18AM[/editline] and for games never use Crossover, it lowers performance and as the guy above said it crashes a lot.
Get the cheapest Macbook Pro when it comes out. I was in your position a few months ago and eventually settled on the base MBP and I don't regret it. I think it looks nicer, and the backlit keyboard alone is worth the extra £100 or whatever. You do get less storage compared to the base Macbook, but it's an incredibly well built laptop, and everyone white Macbook I've seen has discoloured over time, or been chipped by USB ports or the lid itself. Metal is far more solid.
yea, I got my Aluminum MacBook at launch so I got the base model. I wished I saved a little more money for the faster cpu and backlit keyboard or even get the base MacBook Pro. But I'm very happy with my MacBook so I don't completely regret getting it.
Argh I have like no money to get a macbook at the moment :( I have like $200...
Argh I have like no money to get a macbook at the moment :( I have like $200...
why did you ask then
You really asked a fair bit in advance... :raise:

Well, Macbooks are pretty expensive, so 200$ is'nt really enough^^ If i were you, i would buy a pc, i know you just want to play light games, but i just dont get why you cant buy a cheaper laptop, my Uncle got one with Windows 7, 4gb ram, 1024mb graphics card and a 3,2 duo core processor for about 1200$.... It's just not making any sense...
My MacBook I find to be much quicker at surfing the internet than my Windows rig.
How? Why? If you're using IE or firefox with a shitload of plugins on your windows rig, then it's understandable, but otherwise that dosn't make a lick of sense.

Macs' superior hardware uses your internet more efficiently with its revolutionary hardware. :downs:

On Windows (Vista & 7) I keep getting random timeouts (across all browsers), but am yet to encounter any on this. FTP seems to connect faster as well.
Well there is the argument that the hardware & software are made for eachother, so efficiency might be higher indeed.
I know someone with a computer from 2001. She runs a custom configuration file to get TF2 running at a good framerate. Any MacBook should run the game with a good performance config.
I know someone with a computer from 2001. She runs a custom configuration file to get TF2 running at a good framerate. Any MacBook should run the game with a good performance config.
I find it hard to believe that a GeForce 3 or equivalent (2001) can run TF2 at all.
I find it hard to believe that a GeForce 3 or equivalent (2001) can run TF2 at all.
My fx5200 ran HL2, low-medium at about 10fps, so I dread to think what a geforce 3 is like with TF2. Even with the textures and Directx turned to their lowest level, I doubt it would even run, and if it did, not at any conceivable definition of a 'playable framerate'. Most likely she has a slightly upgraded graphics card in there, but fuck man, PCs are cheap, and even a bog standard perbuilt can run TF2, nobody can be that poor. Nice work there. She probably does have an upgraded GPU, but if anything, that's it. Regardless, the config doesn't just turn down textures and directX, it also turns off the skybox, removes characters eyes, stops voice anims, etc. It'll ultimately make the game look completely different, but it'll run on a pretty low-spec machine.
For light gaming you could buy a macbook, i don't regret buying a macbook pro however.
