It's an option, don't freak out.
Fire Emblem on the 3DS is one of the best games I've played on a handheld. I don't think the casual mode deters from strategically maneuvering the maps and devising plans. I don't know of any Fire Emblem fans who were upset with the mode simply because the game itself is so well done.

While it should only be an option, I will admit that when I was younger, I had a choice between Sacred Stones and Shining Force on the GBA for my first strategy games, and being younger, the lack of perma-death was what drove me predominantly towards Shining Force. With there just being an option for it, I feel like people could be introduced to Fire Emblem a little easier, and move up to the regular mode once being more familiar with it.
I played Awakening on casual, I have no shame
I like the option, even if I play on classic myself. I just hope the level design doesn't suffer for it in future games like it did in Awakening.
I started my playthrough of Awakening on hard classic, but the difficulty drives a lot of new players away, 4 people I've tried to get into it, have all quit from the difficulty. As long as we can choose between casual and traditional, I'll be happy.
