Hello Facepunch. I don't really know that much about computers, and I've been thinking of getting a decent-ish gaming PC. As far as I'm aware the Radeon 5870 1gb would be a good graphics card for gaming and an Intel i7 processor would be good aswell. So far I had this in mind.
Radeon 5870
Intel i7 920
While I was searching for PCs and prices I found that there was a Phenom II processor by AMD that had similar clock speeds but was much cheaper, and googling for the two against each other shows that there isn't much difference but the i7 seems to win by 20-30 fps (although they are even on Crysis, I can't understand that).
My questions are :
Is the 5870 a good graphics card for gaming?
If not, what would you suggest?
Is the Phenom II any good?
Is the i7 much better and is it worth the extra price?
What about the i5, is that any good?
Sorry for all the questions but I really don't know too much about it all and I presumed someone here would. Thanks in advance
The 5870 is a great card for gaming.
The i7 is only worth buying if you use hyper-threading, The i5 is good enough, also it will save you some money.
Thanks!
Would a 5850 be allright for gaming too? It's quite a way cheaper than the 5870 and seems to only do a bit less in terms of fps...
Sure, get a 5850. In the future, if you can, buy another 5850. Will rape a 5890.

Providing you have a motherboard that supports Crossfire 16x and 16x.

Yeah, this is a good idea.
Does this sound good to you?
2x Ati Radeon 5850
Intel Core i7 920
6gb ram
2x 500gb harddrives (running in raid 0)
I can't really go any higher than that without lowering something else, if that makes sense. The stuff I posted there is the top of my budget.
(Buying it from Mesh Computers)
Sounds perfect. But do keep track of what motherboard you're going to get. I recommend an X48 or X58 motherboard, as those handle Crossfire perfectly. My recommendation would be ASUS Rampage II GENE, and it costs just over 200 dollars. If that's a bit high, let me know and I'll see what else is possible.
I agree.
ASUS P6T SE Mainboard - Intel Core™ i7 & i7 Extreme Edition - ATX
That should do, right?
Tell me, what applications are you running?
Do you render stuff in programs like 3Ds Max, Blender or Cinema4D?
If not, you really do not need anything more than an i5, as there will be no difference in games.

It's perfect. This computer will be awesome. :v:

Some games run a ton better with an i7 (read: most games,) but most specifically Crysis and GTAIV, and I'm sure many 2010 games. Just because not many games so far utilize it fully doesn't mean people shouldn't get i7s to be more future proof.
Well, does games even support Hyperthreading?
Or wait, is Hyperthreading something that has to be supported? :p
[editline]11:32PM[/editline]
I have an i7 myself FYI, performs great in 3Ds Max, and i'll test out GTA 4 again.
[editline]11:33PM[/editline]
Will i see a difference, from a Q6600 to an i7?
Hyperthreading is a bit Shit to be fair, intel shouldn't have changed the naming convention from socket size (so all LGA1366 CPU's would be i7 and LGA 1156 would be i5) instead they decided if it has hyperthreading it's an i7, even though hyperthreading isn't really that awesome, for some things it works well, but sometimes it can make things hang because these two processes might need the same resources so one has to wait on the other, but if it was turned off it wouldnt hang. I mean, for the most part HT is good, but it's not that good that intel should use it to distinguish between processors /rant

Yes.
Final question : Would two 5850s in crossfire beat a 5870?
They'd beat a 5890.
Is that good?
Yep.
If you build this computer, you're going to fly. :v:
Awesome!
I think I'll go for that then. It's the same price as a 5870, and it beats some other card that has a bigger number so I'll presume is better than a 5870, AND it's within my budget. Thankyou
But can it run Crysis? :smugdog:
But can it run Crysis? :smugdog:
Possibly on low.
At 3FPS.
Actually, this fad should turn into: But can it run Flight Simulator X?
I've never seen a rig that actually runs that fucking game all maxed out. I mean, they used BMPs as textures. :downs:

Nothing can run Crysis. nothing.
Wrong the Sega can run crysis maxed out maan
(/sarcasm)
unless it's for a professional workstation, i5 because you're not going to use hyperthreading enough to be worth the extra
fucking bored of saying this now
5850 is much better price/performance than the 70

That "game" still looks butt ugly when it's maxed.
And it barely runs at all.

I believe he wants the 5870's performance.

Two 5850's will almost double that performance.

wow, 6.5 FPS for another 50% of the price, what a bargain, I was only going to give that money to charity anyway
wasn't there something not long ago about if you overclock a 5850 to 70 speeds it'll perform exactly the same anyway?
