I'm hoping the FP braintrust will come through.
What I'm looking for is an app that will "listen" to the currently playing track on my iPhone and provide the song info. I want it to do this without my having to play the track and have the mic pick up the audio. IE, the identification and playback is all happening on one device at the same time. I listen to a bunch of podcasts with less than complete track listings and I'd like to be able to get more material from some of the artists that I hear. Any ideas?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there is.
Remember, there's an app for, well, just about anything!
look up midomi, I dont know if it does iphone apps though
edit: yer I think this is what your looking for http://www.wired.com/listening_post/2008/07/midomi-iphone-a/
Plug the iPhone to your computer's mic input with a audio cable, and run Tunatic :haw:
how do you mean? record a part of the song and then let the app search for the title of the song? if you mean that, there is an app for that but i forgot the name...

That'd work if I can record the podcast while it's playing on the same device.
Ideally I'd like to be able to do everything on the fly. I'd hear a song I like in the middle of a podcast, and run the other app with the podcast still playing. This other app would then ID what was playing without my having to plug shit into a PC, or play the podcast on another device.
I think this may be against Apple's SDK rules, but I'm open to Cydia/Rock apps also.

Soundhound (formerly Midomi) will get you info and lyrics for single tracks. So far, it doesn't seem to identify songs within a podcast. It does seem worth the $5 they ask for the app though.
As a workaround, I tried to put one of my earbuds up to the iPhone's mic while Soundhound was listening. That didn't work initially, but I think that's more what I was listening to at the time. I will try again with something ubiquitous and report back.
Maybe this will help you. http://www.shazam.com/music/web/pages/iphone.html

Not at all, actually. Shazam has to "listen" to the audio over speakers. In fact, when listening to a podcast if I start Shazam, it stops playback on the iPhone. Soundhound doesn't stop playback at all, which is nice even if it's not giving me the desired result (currently).
