I assumed you clicked on this thread to learn about Steam and it's past. If so, I hope you find everything in here to be as interesting as I did, for I spent hours and hours of my time finding out everything about Steam, not to mention making this OP pretty. Now, even though this thread is about the past, I, myself, am a forward-looking person; I embrace change. However, this does not mean I can't take a trip down memory lane and see how the product I now take for granted used to look in its earlier days. In addition, if you are a long-time Steam user like myself, I hope you start to remember some of the things about the Steam of olden days that you may have forgotten about. It's an amazing feeling, to say the least. If you already know about Steam, I advise you move on. If you do not, feel free to continue reading.
For those not in the know, Steam is an online service by Valve Software, arguably most well-known for Half-Life, and of course, Steam, where you can purchase and download games, software, and user-created content, then share them with any computer you log into Steam on. What makes Steam so unique, however, is its combination of gaming services and online community. When you create your profile, you can show everyone your in-game screenshots and inventories, achievements, and recommendations. You can also join groups, make friends, instant message, and comment on people's content. Anyways, let's move on to Steam's humble beginnings.

Before there was Steam, Valve used a service called WON, or World Opponent Network, to deal with the online aspects of their games. WON was passed along by a few companies and was named different things shortly after its inception in 1997 as SIGS, or Sierra Internet Gaming Services. By using WON, you could host and join Valve servers. You could also find news about the game and manually download patches on the WON Valve game pages. You could even also set up your own webpages on WON, which were typically used as user communities. By today's standards, the services offered were primitive and required lots of manual effort, so it was no surprise that Valve wanted something to replace WON.
Development for Steam started before or around 2002, and a mandatory beta release came out for those who wanted to test out the beta for Counter Strike 1.6. 80,000-300,000 gamers tested out the beta between then until Steam officially came out on September 12th, 2003. Included with this initial version of Steam were only the most basic of functions, such as a games library solely for Valve games, the ability to host, browse, and join servers, automatic updates, and a friends list. However, Valve continued using WON alongside Steam until 2004, when they finally withdrew from the company, resulting in its closure. This resulted in a problem for some mods that ran on WON, as they could not run on Steam unless they were converted. As a result, a fan-made service, WON2, was created, and still runs to this day.
