Hello Facepunch. I am about to update video drivers for my laptop. I have a question - how do I do it safely, without risk of the computer being broken?
There is nothing special to it. Just run the executable and away you go. Windows will make a restore point that you can roll back to if something goes wrong.
Don't I have to remove the driver first before proceeding ?
Some people do. Some people don't. I personally don't, and nothing has gone wrong.
Should I know anything before doing it? I\m running on Windows 7.
Not really. There is absolutely nothing complicated about it.
My cousin, when updating his video drivers, had to re-install his windows because some problem occurred. I don't want to risk it.
I don't know how you could screw Windows up to the point of a reinstall with a video driver update. Just run the executable and your done. Windows 7 will revert the entire OS back to the restore point if you need to.
So, the only way I know to update drivers is to download an executable. Can my system automatically detect and download in some sort of device... Hardware list or etc?
Windows update may do it for you on occasion, but I wouldn't rely on it. Do you know your grapchis card model?
Yes. Yes I do.
Head on over to the manufacturers website and download the update. And run it. If you can't find them I'll give you a walkthrough.
Nah, I know what to do. Thanks for your help. I'll update and if I get a problem I'll post here again. [editline]12:24PM[/editline] Oh, and one more question: Before I update, and if it would fail, how do I do a system restore point? Should I do a system restore save before updating?
using a recovery disk (the site is translated from dutch i had no time to find a better tutorial.) but it will only go wrong if ou really screw up. like pouring water over our pc while updating don't worry :D it will be fine

:( [editline]07:21PM[/editline]
Do not use a recovery disk.
why? it will recover your pc from a restore point
:( [editline]07:21PM[/editline] why? it will recover your pc from a restore point
No, it will restore factory configuration which is totally unrelated to what he wants to do.
