Earlier this morning, the power went off and on several times over a minute, because of that damn winter storm. I went to fire up my comp for some minecraft, and all i got was a flicker of my LEDs coming on and nothing. I am certain the PSU is fucked, but what are the odds that my Mobo is fucked too? i took a look for anything like bulging or vented caps, and no such thing. I'm gonna get a spare PSU i have in another computer and take a look tomorrow, but i want to know if it's really needed. I have a Kingwin Mach 1 1000W PSU that i was planning for SLI, but fell short on funds. This is the first time any sort of serious damage has occurred to this ~2 year old comp. It's an ASUS P8P67 Pro mobo, with a core i5 2500K, 8gb shitty DDR3, and an EVGA GTX670. Nothing is OCd. I think the motherboard would be fine, considering that the first little outage would've shut the comp off, then a secondary surge killed the PSU. I've also tried booting it several times, and it actually got worse, and only pulsed for a split second when i hit the button.
Take the questionable PSU out of the case and disconnect everything. Then turn the power switch on the PSU off.
Then take a paperclip and bend it into a U shape and stick one end in the ATX motherboard connector where the green wire ends. Then take the other end of the paperclip and stick it in the connector where a black wire ends (ground).
Plug the PSU in and tap the power switch to on for a second or two and then turn it back off. If the fan inside the PSU looks like it wants to spin, turn it on again but for a longer interval until you think it will continue to run. If nothing happens when you tap the power switch, or the fan just twitches, then you have a dead PSU.
If the PSU fan does spin, you're going to need a volt meter to test the voltages. You'll need to test +12v (yellow), +5v (red), +3.3v (orange), PWR_GOOD (usually grey at +5v) and -12v (blue). All of the positive voltages need to be within 5% of their rated spec (eg. 12v can be as low as 11.4 and as high as 12.6) and all negative voltages can be up to 10% (only have -12v to contend with.)
I'm gonna give it a shot as soon as i find a piece of wire or a paper clip. Thanks a bunch.
EDIT: The PSU started up normally, so im thinking my mobo got fried, so it looks like i am gonna have to skip out on my xmas present this year and get repair parts, oh well, gives me an excuse to get an ivy bridge CPU.
EDIT: I got a multimeter, and tested the voltages while it was on with the paperclip bypass, and it output normal voltages. This convinced me to purchase a new motherboard. But i am not sure about whether i got the right thing or not. I did some research on the matter, and i am confused, i am still uncertain if it is only the motherboard or the PSU too.
EDIT3: i also noticed the green LED on the motherboard works fine, but again, upon pressing the button on the case, it starts for barely a second and shuts off, making the fans start and then slow down. And it will keep trying to start repeatedly in 5 second increments.
