First of all I want to apologise if I shouldn't be posting this here but I can't find the mega thread
To all people who have played the final fantasy games, or just have a general knowledge in the series.
I was wondering if you can play any final fantasy game or if there is a story that continues through out. I have obviously never played them but I wouldn't mind starting but there's so many.
Also I'm not too sure on what the overall game is about? Im assuming it's something like , there's some heroes that need to defeat some sort of evil but I could be wrong.
Anyway thanks for any help

None are connected minus the obvious sequels like X-2, XIII-2/Lightning returns or spinoffs.

You can jump into most of the games without having played any others since they have self-contained stories. The obvious exceptions being direct sequels (Final Fantasy X-2 for example).
If you're looking for your first one to play, I'd probably recommend Final Fantasy X. It was the last of the classic style games in the main series and has a nice remastered version on Steam/PS3/PS4.
The originals, 1 through 5 I all revolve around a certain familiar theme, Crystals, heroes of light battling evil that sort of thing, they sort of expand into different story ideas after Final Fantasy 6 though.
But no, they don't have any connected stories, other than Final Fantasy X and X2 and Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2 and lightning returns.

If you wanna start off with a good one though, play Final Fantasy 6, it's a fantastic game with a fantastic cast of characters and a great story, or if you want to play a good 3D Final Fantasy you can't go wrong with Final Fantasy 7 or 9.
I'd recommend my personal favorite Final Fantasy though Final Fantasy 5, it has a really fun and in depth battle system that revolves around jobs, really good story and characters you'll grow to love.
Final Fantasy IX is a great game, brings back the fantasy element and is personally one of my favorite games, the characters, world and music are just great all around.
Plus it just got a nice little update on PC, you can buy it on Steam for like 20bucks.
Final fantasy games are of a genre called JRPG.
Mostly about groups of super-powered misfits in designer outfits out to topple god-like evil deities.
There is no continuity (mostly) between any of the FF games unless it has a number beside the roman number. (eg. X-2)
The only similarities of each game are trademark and recycled item and monster names, eg: Phoenix Down (revives), Chocobo (oversized chicken), etc.
The gentlemen above already recommended where you should start, good luck.
Right well I'm really glad that they all have different story's. I want to thank all of you for your help
Fairwarning by the way. These games are long as hell, especially if you're trying to do everything possible. Most of the games are turn based as well, just a heads up!

They have re-occurring characters and hints of some of the games being related to 7 and other stuff but each game is self contained and you can jump right in.

Being related to the original FF games you mean? 7 wasn't really the crown jewel although it did introduce some memorable characters.
To OP:
If you plan on playing FF14 (the mmo) just be aware that there are references to older FF games in almost every nook and cranny from enemy names to actual full blown characters like [sp]Gilgamesh[/sp]

Ah I meant like how the last few have FF7 references but I know what you mean

The Active Time Battled system is known to be better depending on your preference.

Though I tell you Final Fantasy X is my favourite. It leaves the community divided but for all its flaws it's still a gem to me. I'm unsure if it's like... The easiest to get into. But it's pretty damn good. Also Final Fantasy IV and VI are great games also.
Also I recommend Final Fantasy VII. For me it was the easiest to play, and I'm not like an expert RPG player or anything so it was a good one to get into.
