• Need suggestions for a good, cheap, notebook?

I'm looking for a decent notebook that I'm mostly wanting to just run Skype, Firefox, and Windows Live Messenger, for when I travel. Budget: AT THE VERY LEAST below $400. (But really don't even wanna spend that much...) Preferred brand: Anything, but not Gateway, please. I have had a horrible history with them. Will accept Macs as well. (In fact for a moment I thought about just getting one anyways...) Preferred size: Very light weight, small, Don't care too much about screen size anyways Preferred specs: Just enough to run a combo of Skype, Windows Live and Firefox at once, not necessarily using them all at once to their fullest. Would like at least a mic. Bonus points for a webcam but not needed. Not intending to use this for ANY sort of gaming whatsoever. And of course it needs wireless capabilities and at least 1 USB port. Not much else needed. Preferred site and currency: Newegg.com preferred, but might accept elsewhere. US Dollars. (Living in Ohio) Do not want: Anything that has less then Windows XP on it. Edit: And anything less then OSX Tiger 10. Bonus for Leopard and Snow Leopard. Any Gateway computers. What I was looking at before making this thread: Anything on this page http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100006740%204018&IsNodeId=1&name=%24200%20-%20%24300 I am horrible at picking out computers. This is not necessarily a "choose for me" as I've narrowed down some big things, and more so, I want suggestions and be pointed the right direction. Please move this, mods, if this isn't the right place or whatever. Thanks. Edit: Some other notes.. I'm not well experienced with computers using OSX. Enough to know what I'm doing with the basics and most of the settings, but anything much more, not really.
You can't get a decent Mac for <$400, unless you are willing to trawl through eBay looking for a broken one and want to fix it yourself.
The one on the page I linked was 270 something or whatever and it was re.. Recertified. But I'm feeling iffy on it. I've heard a lot of logic board issues on the iBook G4's.
57 reads and no suggestions really... Is $400 really too small of a budget for a notebook, of all things?
It is at the very low end of the spectrum... Look at some netbooks, they're absolutely amazing for what you want. You could find something in a $400 price range, and it'd be pretty damn good. I'm using a Acer Aspire One netbook right now, it's tiny, it weighs about a pound, and battery life is about 7 hours. Even runs games like Quake 3, also got KOTOR I to run on here, although it gets choppy. Just saying. I have class in 5 minutes, I'll take a look around for some decent ones later.
I looked those up just now on Amazon since I couldn't really find it elsewhere, and I REALLY like that one! Thanks for the suggestion. We might have a winner here.
I'd also say look at the Asus netbooks. And see if you can go to a best buy or something and take a look at them, the touch pad on the Aspire Ones are weird... Although if you have a muse it doesn't matter. Also, reminder, there's no optical disk drive, you need an external for CD/DVD...
Picking netbooks is easy. Just make sure it has a 6 cell battery, a fairly good touchpad and keyboard. Everything else is very similar. If you want something that is NOT a netbook, check out the IBM Thinkpad T42. They're in your price range, though don't offer a webcam.
Okay then. I might try to drag my mother to Best Buy soon so we can look. I've been helping my parents with getting rid of our more-then-dead tree out front so... Hopefully I've worked well enough for this, I killed my back doing so... :saddowns: Thanks for the suggestions once again.
Don't buy from worst buy PLEASE.
Pepper;25498787']don't buy from worst buy PLEASE
Yea I meant go there to get a look at them... Probably would be better to buy elsewhere.
My mother and I know better then to buy from them. We just go there to get a look at things we look at online, physically. She's an excellent shopper.
Well that's good then. I don't know why I should've been saying anything, I'm 90% certain this netbook came from there... Although I didn't buy it, and it's my mom's anyway...
